If the hens one functioning ovary isn't working at full tilt, she may develop the characteristic of the opposite sex.

My friend has a black rock that has changed sex. There was an article in the Mail about him/her. Doesn't lay eggs and can't "perform" as a cockerel either apart from the crowing.

Primrose has been leaping on Barry for the last few weeks in genuine cockerel style - Ironic that Barry is the one with the boys names - Blooming chickens!! And she is laying as well!!

My ducks used to 'leap' on each other 3 or 4 deep. I wrote about the duck sandwiches at primary school not realising what they were doing.

My Tinsel (ex-batt) is going through the change. When we first picked her up she started making strange noises that were like she was crowing but muted. She now has spurs, a huge comb and big wattles. She hasn't crowed properly, thankfully as would have to re-home her. She bosses everybody about and struts around the garden as if she owns it.

My Dad had backyard chickens as a lad in the war years, and always insisted that one or two had started as hens and turned into cockerels. I always took it with a , I couldn't see how that could have happened...

 

It seems I owe him an apology!

That's really weird...maybe that's what's happening to Starlet though, although I'm no longer sure if she actually lays because Muddles and her lay really similar looking eggs and I can't tell them apart any more!
