Scramble
Are there any things that you can make for chickens to keep them warm? I've heard you can make them porridge? I think they'd really appreciate some warm snacks as it was below freezing yesterday, and slight snow I thought this was autumn, apparently it's winter.... x
Egluntyne
They love porridge made from layers mash or pellets, with goodies like raisinf added. The pellets absorb quite a lot of water, and it takes a while to soak in.....but the hens love it. It smells a bit weird. I give mine Weetabix. They go mad for it. chelsea
porridge made with porridge oats and hot water (cool before serving), stir in a few pinches of poultry spice (handy for moulting chooks!) and scatter with topping of a few raisins and crunchy sesame seeds. Ideal for a treat on a frosty morning. mine like theirs sloppy but not stodgey
Egluntyne
I mix the weetabix with warm water from the kettle. Aaron....I mix the pellets with water, and then go away and do something for about 10 minutes as it does take a while for the water to absorb. I then give it a good stir round and add more water from the kettle to get a nice consistency. Then I add whatever takes my fancy. Raisins, a bit of chicken spice, grated apple. Janty
I mix layers mash with poultry spice, cod liver oil, a teaspoon of marmite and warm water each morning for the girls' breakfast. I sometimes throw in sultanas, etc. and it also gives me a good medium to feed them their flubenvet in.
McChook
I just make mine porridge for breakfast (with water, not milk and golden syrup!) and pour boiling water over layers pellets (and leave to cool a little) for dinner - spoilt little madams! GreenGirl
Weetabix, good idea - i have some left over from the days when I could eat wheat. Mine love breakfast of bokashi and pellets covered with a cup of hot water i have mixed marmite into, with a few mealworms which swell up in the water Smells strong, and one of my cats goes absolutely mad for it too, I will be fighting her to get her head out of the bowl as i mix it up They also have oats soaked in warm water, with a bit of corn and poultry spice before bed, you know, just to give them something warm in their tummies before bed
Mrs Kettle
I made mine porridge this morning for the first time, as a 'sorry' for my husband locking them out of the Eglu last night.... Suffice it to say that, tho' they wolfed it down, peace negotiations are ongoing.

He has failed to grasp the simple dictum of 'always check they're all in there first'. He is, however, suitably chastened!

moomin
aaron if you are talking about your tiny baby pekins (saw them on your other post! ), I doubt if they will be too interested in treats/porridge yet. Mine were 8 weeks old when I got them and it was AGES before they would try anything different. They just had a few bits of lettuce as treats, and just stuck to their growers pellets. moomin
hi moomin no the pekins would'nt touch it and my 18 week old silkies wont touch it either aaron Sometimes you have to keep trying. Wait a couple of days and then just make them up a little bit to try so that you don't waste all your supplies. I made my girls weetabix with warm water this aft and they tried it and then turned their beaks up!
