Crooked Chicken
Any good ideas on how to get rid of these in the run??? I have a big lovely covered run for my girls. Nice and dry in there, but on sunny days it's overrun with flies. We're going away next week and my neighbour is going to look after the girls. I'm just worried about what she'll think if she goes in there and there's hoards of flies everywhere. Anything I should do??? or just something we have to put up with? AnnieP
How about sprinkling Citronella on the base?
Crooked Chicken
Thanks Annie P - I'll try that. Where do you get it from (garden centres or pet shops) and in what form (liquid, gel??). I've bought citronella candles before, but not citronella itself.
Egluntyne
Got my citronella from Boots. Cost about 3 quid. Botanics Range.
kannie
We've got hemcore (aubiouse + citronella) in the run, but we've still got flies, I'm afraid. Its this hot weather. Maybe I should put some fresh hemcore down on top.
Cinnamon
Citronella is dping the trick for us - we just bought a little bottle of the concentrated aromatherapy stuff. If smells lovely Maybe you could try some of those Vapona fly things,if you can put them up high enough,or fly papaers?
Egluntyne
I think those Vapona fly thingies might give off noxious fumes which might make the hens ill, being as they will be in a confined space with them overnight.
ali-s
Last year I used a Red top Fly Trap which was brilliant but a little smelly if you got to close to it. Kleeneeze have a smiliar fly trap to the red top for sale and I think they worked out a bit cheaper. the price was for two fly traps. Cinnamon
I think those Vapona fly thingies might give off noxious fumes which might make the hens ill, being as they will be in a confined space with them overnight. I would put them up high around the run, rather than actually in the Eglu
Eyren
I have a Wasp Trap http://www.lakelandlimited.co.uk/product.aspx/summer/buzzoff!50104 and I'm thinking of trying it out as a fly trap, using chicken poo in water as bait - eeww!
The Dogmother
I sprinkle citronella and eucalyptus oils in my run and Eglu - keeps the flies down really well - it's just the rest for the garden that I worry about now!
Richard and Jo
We got a fly trap last Tuesday which was supposed to last for about 3 months. We had to take it to the dump today because of the smell and it was full of flies - I would say several thousand!!! It has certainly lessened the number of green bottles in our garden. It is the hot weather causing the problem - our neighbours have loads of flies in their garden in the hedge- they dont have chickens. We worry the neighbours will think the chickens are the cause of the flies.
Eyren
The greenbottles seem to materialize out of thin air whenever one of mine does one of those runny gland-purging poos. In this heat, though, the liquid evaporates in a couple of minutes and they all disappear until the next time
The Dogmother
That's one advantage of it being so hot - the poo is set solid within 5 minutes of being done I was paranoid about the flies too, but friends without animals have loads too, so I'm not too worried now. Lesley-Jean
I like the Green Bottles. Helps me find the poo on the grass before I tread in it
