Am i the only one whose OH doesn't care?

Recommended Posts

Since getting my chickens and well before i only buy free range eggs and mostly free range chicken. recently i'd rather buy things that don't contain caged birds eggs so get my salad cream from M&S and look around for shops and suppliers that use free range. i was asking hubby did he realise that Horseradish sauce had egg in and how i didn't buy Colmans because it used caged and he said 'do i really care!!' :wall::wall:

i thought he might have changed but i think when he shops he only buys free range/ organic to please me :eh: even though he often says how nice they taste :wall:

he comes from a family of 8 so he is the least fussy man imaginable, which in some ways is great.

Are all your OH's like you and i'm the only one with a non caring hubby?

Mine couldn't care less either Barbara - very frustrating! :? He hated it when I stopped buying Hellmans mayo and used to sneak jars in  Good job they've now gone free range

When I talk to him about anything green he nods and makes all the right noises, then promptly goes out and does exactly what he's always done :wall::wall:

And they are not his chickens, he would be happy to see the back of them, but it's his friend's egg order that gets priority every week!

Ah thats a relief i seem to get the impression that everyone on here has understanding like minded OH's lol

Hubby does prefer organic veg but thats about it and though he hasn't much interest in the chickens he does let them out in the mornings for me :D his saving grace. But he really reackons he would eat any rubbish BUT he does comment when we are out that something looks yuck so there is a glimmer there maybe another 20yrs lol

We've just got a new food waste bin from the council and dh is refusing to use it on principle that we already recycle paper, card, plastic, tin and glass; we compost veg/fruit waste and the hens eat a lot of the leftovers. His rationale is that having the plastic food waste caddy on our chic, minimalist worktop is a bloomin liberty.

Mind you, given that he rarely clears away the dishes it's not too much of an issue!

I'm sure if he did the shopping (he doesn't) he wouldn't check labels for free range eggs within products, although he has now come round to paying more for freerange chicken meat (only because it tastes so much better).

And, the chickens were his idea (I wanted guinea pigs :D ) but he's only fed them a handful of times when I've been away and maybe cleaned them out once in the year we've had them.

His defence is that he works full time while I'm a full time mum, but he was the same when we both worked!

I wouldn't swap him though - he puts up with me and that's a rare talent

Left to his own devices my DH would just buy any old rubbish, but I have changed him in many ways foodwise, and he won't buy supermarket meat anymore but uses our local freerange butcher, he doesn't check labels though :( We recently had some unexpected guests and I sent him out to buy some cakes as we had nothing in the house. He came back with Mr. Kipling cakes :evil: I was furious as he knows they are a no no due to using cruel eggs. He does help me clean the chickens out, but that's about it, he doesn't really take an interest in them sigh.

Oh i get no help with cleaning, its a good job i have a large run and only 2 chooks at the moment as i seem to have no spare time and its dark before i get out there during the week

Mine only helps me with the cleaning in as much as due to arthritis I can't lift the Eglu hood off on my own, neither can I heft 20kg bags of hemcore around. He does it because I can't, the actual yukky bit of cleaning them out is always left to me  although I quite like doing it unless it's freezing cold and raining.

Mine cares - sort of. He doesn't shop much and he doesn't do much in the house - actually zilch there come to think of it. But he does work so hard at his job and sleeps very little because of it. He loves the birds - from a safe distance - and that they have the freedom of our garden and compares them to those other poor caged ones.

But then he will stuff something revolting such as Pot Noodles!

I meant to add that mine is good in other ways too.

He is a builder & he either recycles or burns most of the rubbish we have. Most of it is wood, so that fuels our burner.

He does get the mick taken out of him for this by some other chaps sometimes, but it makes me proud that he takes a stand.

lol yes mine does as hes told re recyclying lol i collect all my cardboard as we don't have a bin for that, then i send him to the town recyclying centre. he did get cross once and said he would leave it out for the rubbish men but then must have felt guilty because he didn't lol

i think he doesn't like to admit that things are good ideas but secretly believes some are lol

its the food thing i dispare of

i would say he works hard but in the last month he has only worked about week and a half  his factory has shut down due to lack of work, fully paid but may have to work saturdays when work picks up. His actual job is under no threat but haing him home all the time when i work at home drives me mad!!!! he is off again for a week November 17th and finishes for xmas 17th december  so not fair!!!

Hey, at least you have partners willing to let you keep hens!

I've nagged, wheedled, pled, begged, and eventually bargained to get permission to get an Eglu (my Christmas present  ), and even then I'm being a bit dishonest about the true cost (okay, I'm lying through my back teeth  ) - might well come back to bite me!!!

Even then, if I do get the eglu, no chooks until March/April time, and I guarantee I'll get NO help, just whinges that I'm spending too much time on them....

Truth is, I'm praying for some hens with a really nice temprament that will win over her heart!! Without that, the project is doomed long term.....

Only saving grace is the fact that eglu's keep their value so well, so if by this time next year it has all gone south, at the very least I won't lose shedloads of cash.

Makes a change to hear that it is the male partner who wants the hens and the female partner who is putting her foot down with a firm hand. :D

Why not buy the Eglu for her for Christmas? :D

I must admit to glossing over the price of Eglus as Him Indoors is not a Yorkshireman for nothing, but it is my money so.......:D

Good luck. I'm sure you will get one in the end.

Right, you need to take action :shameonu: .

What exactly has she got against having chickens? Does she just say no, or has she got some genuine concerns? If you can give us her reasons against, we can all come up with reasons for and you can show her our replies :D . I think a lot of people have preconceived ideas before they have chickens of their own and need to be educated  .

I was going to post exactly the same reply :) It's not like wanting a cat or a dog which would live in the house, the chickens would live in the garden. If you said you would be completely responsible for fettling, feeding, letting them out, ordering food etc., and that she could just ignore them totally, what could her objections be? Unless of course she has a chicken phobia

Here's my post from the other thread(s) (not that you're obsessed of course, Mike!:lol: )

Mike - you could always suggest that you buy it to keep for a while? It is the best way for you to acquire an Eglu for less than having one delivered new from Omlet and it will hold its value.

You can say that if you don't go ahead and use it then you can re-sell it and probably not lose any money?

Just a thought........ :D

Then you might find that there is a BHWT rescue in your area......and it would be such a nice Christmas present (to the hens of course  ) to rescue some.............

Hens are easier to look after than both children and dogs............. an Eglu will hardly add to the workload.........

Tried to post - just disappeared - 2nd time lucky. Don't give up hope, I had mine for my 50th birthday - best pressie ever. Cubes and Eglus are soooo easy to clean (a really good point), poo is good for the garden, they lay eggs - usually, they are friendly, they make you laugh - Piggy Sioux was going for a raisin when she skidded sideways on the patio earlier today(more haste less speed young lady)! Disney films captured chickens behaviour so well!

After reading a couple more postings I feel I ought to add - start with small to medium size birds - mine are so huge and I got smacked in the nose with a wing the other day - didn't half hurt! Half Nelson holds used here! But hens are lovely and soft to touch - except after a dustbath when they resemble road kill and all dirty and gritty.

Of course they are so stupid and not manipulative at all :liar:

Fingers crossed for you.
