Hermione hen - chickens as pets

Recommended Posts

Hermione hen and her partner in crime Hedwig hen arrived from Omlet last August 07.

I love them both to bits and they've really made a suprising impact on our lives. Can't imagine ever not keeping chickens in the future!

Hermione hen has been looking off colour the last few days and not laying. We wondered if she was egg bound and followed all the advice about it on this forum (thanks everyone!!!!!) with no results. Today hubby took her to the vet who found a lump and suspects she has cancer, however did give us the slight hope, if not cancer, then an infection which we are going to attempt to treat over the next 7 days.

It's really sad but I know there's nothing we can do - just have to see if the medicine makes a diference. Hedwig and Hermione are such a great little team, it will be very sad to see that come to an end. I am realistic though and know that we have given her the life of luxury and have done all we can in terms of trying to make her better, so all we can do is wait and see.

I've been a bit saddened though by the responses I've had from people at work when I've told them. They seem to think it is funny because 'she's only a chicken', even making jokes about it. Yes I know she's only a chook but she is still a pet to us and I can't imagine people would find it funny if it was a dog or cat.

Anyhoo - just needed to have a bit of a rant and hoped that perhaps people on here would understand how you do see a chook as a pet - especially one of your first Omlet girls! Thanks x

I'm so sorry to hear about your worries, and I do hope Hermione gets better! You are right to say that people are so much more off-hand, even cruel, about hens when they would never do this about a pet cat or dog*. Rise above it and come talk to us - we understand!

(*a really close friend admitted that she and her family are running a book to see how long our girls last before a fox gets them, no one in her family thinks they will make it a year. I don't know what was more hurtful, the fact that they are doing this or the fact that she was quite happy telling me about it!)

So sorry to hear about Hermione and will keep fingers crossed that it is just an infection which can be cured. People who have never had chickens can be very insensitive at times, although their attitude generally changes once they actually meet them and realise what great little characters they are.

Oh poor you and poor hermione. I hope it's an infection and she's right as rain in a week or so.

People can be total buttheads about chooks. Today 2 people asked me whether we'd be eating ours as soon as they stop laying. Again. No, cos I didn't eat the cat when he got old and I didn't batter and fry my fish when they were on their way out. Pets are pets, not future roast dinners. And chooks are lovely, funny, interesting, lovable pets.

Rant away, babe, you've loads of people on your side.

I agree with everyone else humans can be soooooooo ignorant and shallow...if they have a dog or cat and us henny folk suggested eating them when they pass, there would be an uproar.... my brother unfortunately is of the ignorant variety of human, he never fails to ask me if he can have roast chicken for tea courtesy of one of my girls,:roll: if I asked if I could eat his hamster he'd throw a wobbler...ignorant insensitive stupid shallow morons!! stay with the gang here... we are all sane, (well most of us are)..:lol::lol::lol:

sorry to hear about Hermione, fingers crossed she is OK.

all us omleteers know how important our chooks are. Others just don't understand (my neighbour nearly had a fit when he found out I had actually named my girls...), but that is their problem.

Thinking of you lots (especially with such great names! )

Thankyou sooooo much for all your lovely responses.

Absolutely - I guess people who haven't had chooks themselves just don't understand what fab, funny and friendly (even if it is only belly-love!!) pets they are (and the eggs are a bonus!!).

I was outside this morning before work with last nights left over pasta , peas, and corn. Pleased to see Hermione eating. Have also cleaned out the eglu - fresh straw and paper. Going to make sure she has the best week ever just in case.

Cheers again! I had drifted away from this forum a bit  (started a new job earlier in the year which is pretty strict about internet access) had forgotten what a supportive and helpful community this is!! Will definately be making the time to 'omlet' more again from now on!! x :)

So sorry to hear about Hermione - I really hope she makes it - if she's eating then hopefully that's a good sign. I sadly lost one of my chickens on Sunday and I amost feel that I have to hide the fact that I'm really upset about it to avoid ridicule from certain narrow minded people.

Best of luck to little Hermione - hope she gets well soon. :)
