KAZAROO
I know this is a tetchy subject- I have gone off meat... But I wondered how many other people eat meat; or more precisely chicken since having their girls.... I was a Veggie for 5 years and since being preggers for a second time don't really eat meat.... Just wondered if since having your hens some of you have gone off the idea?

I farmed for 10yrs so to me its about good sourcing and also supporting local farmers. Ads eats meat but we can take it or leave it! Rather have a nice ole' boiled egg

bronze
We still eat both white and red meat, but am now try to source ethically raised meat. Same here. and here. Though I would go vegan rather than any other option. It wouldnt be the actual say drinking of millk that I would struggle with but more the waste such as calves not used for veal. Janty
I too eat meat. I especially love lamb and a nice steak. However, as a family we only eat free range meat and try to buy only free range organic chicken as it has enjoyed a longer more natural life. moochoo
Both OH and I eat both red and white meat. We are very particular about where are meat comes from and how it is reared and slaughtered. We try and eat seasonally and are happy to shoot local game for our own consumption.

I was just interested; especially as I come from a farming back-ground. I think there's a lot to be said for rearing and harvesting your own food and admire anybody who does this; sadly the mice ate most of what I planted this year. I'm just so squeamish these days. It took me a while to get used to eating eggs from "my" girls too! But I think that there is now a sway toward people being more conscious of where their food is coming from. My mum; bless her; didn't even want to try our eggs... But I gave her 6 as a "Thank-you" and they are converted now! As a farmer I was always conscious to eat and drink stuff produced from local people and I think that more and more of us are starting to realize that this is how communities thrive; and to think about what we want as consumers. Its fantastic that there's so much variety out there!!!!

ruth1
We eat both-I didnt eat chicken for years after seeing a Panorama type programme on how food chain chickens were raised and slaughtered years ago. but its slowly filtered back in, i look out for how meat is produced though. I could live without it though quite easily apart from Bacon- OH couldnt though- I've been told to add.
Redwing
We still eat both white and red meat, but am now try to source ethically raised meat. Same here. Me too I am far more conscious of the decisions I make since getting the girls - I spend more money on local meat or supermarket free range meat and make it go further rather than buy the very cheap stuff. Seagazer
I went off of eating red and white meat but I still ate fish about 13 ears ago. Lasted about a couple of years. I got fed up of cooking different things for the family and myself. As a family though we often have a meal without meat. We love fish and our eggs (in fact ES has actually eaten some of my eggs this week - that only took 6 months!)
moochoo
We have friends who own a farm with some woodland so we often get rabbits, hares, pheasants...he's trying to stock up on some partridges for next year. We end up shooting more rabbits than anything as they get so out of control numbers wise.
..lay a little egg for me
We still eat both white and red meat, but am now try to source ethically raised meat. Me too. I have some good local suppliers of organic free range meat, so I get virtually all my meat from there.
Al
I eat all meat, but after getting my hens I didn't eat chicken for months. I buy free range organic chicken, free range pig (bacon, pork, sausage etc) and other meat from my local butcher, who is very good. I buy fish from the supermarket as there aren't any fishmongers around here. But I don't eat a lot of meat because decent well-raised meat is expensive. I eat a lot of eggs though A friend gave us a pheasant the other day and I was horrified when I saw it. It had had a good natural life and a quick death but with it's feathers still on and it's neck broken it reminded me of a dead hen and therefore of my own ladies. But once it had been plucked and roasted it tasted really good . Even though I know something has to die for me to have meat on my plate, I'm still uncomfortable when I have to face up to it in that way... KAZAROO
I'm so glad that people eat game and Al's reply really reflects how vital it is to be educated about our food! I'm glad so many of you understand the need to control the rabbit and deer population Isn't it lovely to know that what we are putting in our mouths has come from the best possible source and lived an exceptional life! I am so glad we have the option to choose more ethically produced products. As a farmer I was always conscious of the restrictions of MAFF. Obviously understanding that by producing for consumers you have to be very careful and mindful of making people ill. But also the fact that pumping animals for consumption full of antibiotics and growth hormones must some how affect the well being of the creature and quality of the end product. Also genetics and breeding for producing high milk yielders and heavy beef calves played a high part in my choices when buying stock and even now I prefer to buy traditionally reared beef and poultry on the rare occasions I do. Getting a bit off track....
mostin
I have found it very difficult to eat chicken since getting my girls, but if I do I try to make sure it is from "happy chickens", who have had a happy life, and a clean and quick death with as little stressful travelling time as possible. We eat alot less meat these days than we used to as we buy better quality, free range "happy meat", but because it is much more expensive, we buy much less of it. I love vegetatrian food anyway so problem
