likeastar--x
poor poor lula. after all the drama of her impacted crop and her pulling through that, now this has happened... basically its horrible weather today and my boyfriend was cleaning out the chicks so he let them roam about outside. after hed finshed he left them for a while because they seemed to be enjoying themselves, but then we heard them all screaming outside. i ran out and saff and florence were about but we coldnt find lula. then she came limping out of the bushes over to me. we thought she might be fine and just limping because of the weight of the water o her feathers. i gave her a bath and foudn these huge gash marks near her vent. weve cleaned them with TCP diluted in water and there are 3 or 4 big gashes, you can see inside her, though there is no bleeding. she keeps closing her eyes. we took her inside and locked her in the dogs room to keep her seperate. shes just standing there not moving though shes stopped panting. weve offered her food and water but even though she looked at them she didnt have any, which isnt like her. i know shes very likely going to die, i just dont know what to do. the vets are closed we live in a small town with only one or two vets in a 40 mile radius. so we cant take her there we just want to make her comfortable until she passes. does anyone have any experience with this sort of thing or know what we should do? thanks... moochoo
Hi wrap her up, keep her warm. If you have any rescue remedy give her a couple of drops if not try some honey in water to keep her energy up. It's a good sign, she not bleeding. You've done everything you can with her wound. Sadly time will tell how she copes with the shock. I hope she pulls through.
Guest
this needs veterniary attention surely!? If you can "see inside her" then she must need stitiches and I would say a course of antibiotics in case there's any infection. Until you can get her to a vet (and that must be asap) keep her warm and quiet and try her with some rescue remedy. good luck! **edit** just read your note about the vet, don't they have an emergency number? I thought all vets did
likeastar--x
shes still alive...shes walking around a bit but wont eat anything...when i pick her up she shuts her eyes and her foot doesnt grip around my hand like it normally does... we got some iodine from the chemist so i think shes covered for infection at the moment...its just the shock really. when we were dabbing the idodine in and looking at her she didnt even flinch... shes in a quiet place away from everything on her own. should we cover it up with a plaster or something? called the vet and got answer machine. doesnt have a 24 hour call out. i have some sutre material but i dont want to stress her out even more by trying to stitch the hole myself. if shes alive by monday we'll take her to the vet... Guest
I think warmth, peace and quiet are the best medicine for now, hope she pulls thru, poor little thing
Egluntyne
What a shame. If you can see her insides then you really must try to find a vet somewhere. She will likely get an infection as a foxes mouth is notoriously filthy and teeming with bacteria. Can you ring the local RSPCA and ask them for the number of a vet who can help you? I would wrap her in a towel and keep her warm and quiet and try to get fluids into her. She needs to be seen before Monday.
likeastar--x
egg yolk like stuff is coming out of her bum, dont know if this is a problem or not ? has she not got the strength to lay ? doesnt want to sit on the perch either, how long does shock last ? wounds are pretty clean, just worried she might die over night , is it normal for her not to eat anything ? Thanks x
moochoo
Don't worry too much about feeding her. If you can syringe some fluids into her it'll really help.

Thanks x it could actually be egg yolk, the attack might have caused an egg to break inside her and she's expelling it now.

dacktarie
Hi,this happened to one of mine a week ago you are doing everything we did and Hazel had recovered very well from the shock by the next morning. She did go to the vets for stiches, but they separated and she still healed! I found that she was ok without antibiotics after 2 days as the wound was healing really quickly and is continuing to do so. Best of luck Emma. Guest
somewhere warmer if you can, not too hot though. Don't put her next to a radiator or anything but a warm, quiet, dark room, if you have one. If not, are you able to maybe wrap a hot water bottle in a towel and pop it under her? disturb her as little as possible now if you can too, just peep in on her now and again. sandyhas3chucks
I think you need to get a cat box or a crate that you can cover. you seem to have a fair few chickens & are going to need somewhere "SAFE" calm quiet warm for a poorly chook at some time, 45 mins really isn't that far to go for a vet, mine isn't much nearer, and as someone said in a previous post, thet DO have emergency numbers to call, even for advice & vets will do call outs. Really sorry about Lula, but you do need to be prepared for any type of emergencyin the future. Shock is the main thing, keep them calm, warm, safe & quiet.perhaps an hour or so reading up on the advice given by the experts here or more experienced anyway, & see what they advise others for shock etc. good luck with the safer run.
