lula attacked by fox a minute ago...(shes gone)

I think you need to get a cat box or a crate that you can cover. you seem to have a fair few chickens & are going to need somewhere "SAFE" calm quiet warm for a poorly chook at some time,

45 mins really isn't that far to go for a vet, mine isn't much nearer, and as someone said in a previous post, thet DO have emergency numbers to call, even for advice & vets will do call outs.

Really sorry about Lula, but you do need to be prepared for any type of emergencyin the future. Shock is the main thing, keep them calm, warm, safe & quiet.perhaps an hour or so reading up on the advice given by the experts here or more experienced anyway, & see what they advise others for shock etc.

good luck with the safer run.

I think this is really good advice.

If anything similar ever happens again your first priority must be warmth and safety and if possible fluids (plastic syringe perhaps if she won't drink?) until you can get her to a vet asap, definately keep the dog/other pets out of the way. I'd definately make sure you have got this covered before taking on the responsibility of another hen.

All the best and hope your other girls have recovered OK from their scare x x

I bought a lock and lock first aid box for the family and then as we got more pets decided that a pet one would be good too (not that I've had to use it that often, thankfully). In it I have rescue remedy, arnica cream, cod liver oil, bandages, the cats' wormers, flubenvet, syringes, etc. That way I have all the first aid stuff for us together and all the first aid stuff for the pets together. It's always handy and we have peace of mind should we need it. I have also printed out the number of the vets and stuck it to the top just in case panic sets in and I can't find the phone or my mobile (unlikely but I like to be prepared).

It was just that we were acumulating more and more pet remedies and thought that we needed a central place to store them.

We also have a larger tub that fits inside one of the kitchen cupboards that is labelled pet medicines and this is for bigger things like apple cider vinegar, etc.

thanks for your advice. to be honest aswell as it being closed i also partly didnt want to take her to the vets. she was obviously extremely distressed and i didnt want to upset her further with the long car ride if she had survived another day. although i love the chicks as pets, im not willing to call out a vet and pay extortionate amounts when she was probably dying already.

although everyone was telling me to keep her warm we were all a bit shocked and sort of acceptant that she would die, so we werent really thinking straight. because i always just think of chickens as being little ovens i presumed keeping her warm just meant 'not letting her get cold'. the room was a bit cooler than the house, but warmer than the coop. also we found out that she was dead before the dog was put out, so it wasnt that.

apparently because there are now wheelie bins instead of bin bags urban foxes are starving and there is a rapid increase in the amount of household pets being attacked. i think this may have been related as we have a lot of foxes round here but they had never come near the chickens before.

were putting up netting over the roof for the chicks so this wont happen again. it was a tough lesson to learn, but im happy that she had a good life, and at least she didnt die of the fox tearing her to bits.

thanks for your comments and advice, i really appreciate it. (Bluebelle)

I would have done the same regarding moving her. did the same when I broke my girls leg with a door! :( Didn't move her til I felt it was safe. But would have called vet for advice, anyway you are now armed with more knowledge. Very sad for your loss, but priority now to ensure the others safety, as the fox now has had a taste he will be watching. Think you probably got a good point with the whelie bins.

Perhaps you shouild sneak about at night opening lids  ONLY KIDDING!!!!

terribly sorry to hear all this..

I'm sure you didnt make the chook suffer by being in the utility room..as it was warmer than outside..

I also quite easily understand that you were reluctant to call out an emergency vet...because of the enormous expense...

we were once advised by a vet that a biopsy was required on both of our white cats ears (she wasnt insured) at a cost of over £200...this was a few years ago) and I just couldnt possibly afford it so I didnt..

The next year on a routine vets visit, another vet said it happened a lot with white cats's ears burning and just to put sun block on them...and cutting them was too drastic as she was well)..

I'm sure your chicken passed away with the shock...and you did your very best for her :-)

very sorry for your loss..
