Egluntyne
Have just been to the dentist and had to have a filling. The first one in over 20 years. in fact, it was a replacement, so I don't feel too bad about that. However, it cost me £46.60. and I'm an NHS patient! I feel faint! Leicester_H
Not bad for 20 years !! A simple 6 monthly check up costs £16 - even when he does NOTHING. Approx £2 per minute of his time! I think annual check-ups should be FREE - I mean, who would go just to get their monies worth ?? H
The Dogmother
Count yourself lucky Egluntine - theer aren't any NHS dentists in Banbury.. I had a replacement of a 20 YO filling last month and it cost me over £70 Luckily, because I am a patient there, our dentist is under contract to provide NHS treatment for Rosie though. Gamebird
Finding an NHS dentist in my area is as rare as hens' teeth. I have no choice but to go privately. Recently I had a check-up by the dentist and a going over by the hygenist and that cost me £75. Goodness knows what it will cost if ever I have any actual work done. Mrs Webmuppet
We have a ADP dentist and that costs us a small fortune each month.
Snowy
I forgot my dentists appointment (NHS) so got kicked off and had to go back to the bottom of the list - was told it was a two year wait for an appointment!!! So we bit the bullet and went privately (to a practice where the children can still be NHS). I also needed an old filling replacing - £136!! Can't afford for OH to go yet, his bill will be over £300 It was £36 to have a check up last week.
craftyhunnypie
I was very lucky as recently went the dentist, 1st time in 21 years & no treatment needed. But I do brush Twice a day & dental tape & mouthwash once a day. Not there now until next September. We look after our teeth, as neither of us want teeth in a glass. Emma.x Ditto to all the above.....hence the filling being just a replacement and not a new one, the first in over 20 years. It seemed a bit loose apparently, and neither me nor the dentist wanted it to fall out on Christmas Day! Was obsessed with dental matters when the children were young. I am proud of the fact that they all got to 18 without having any fillings. They are on their own now, but still haven't had any.
Lesley
My two didn't have any fillings either - or lose any adult teeth, son broke his front teeth in the swimming pool and had to have them capped, but that's all. They're in their thirties now and have had very little treatment (no sweets until they earned their own money ) I could have bought another Eglu with what i paid for my last lot of treatment - and that's with looking after my teeth because I don't want to see mine in a glass either .......and I remember the Pam Ayres ode only too well
The Dogmother
I haven't had a new filling in over 20 years either. My current dentist was puzzled that I had any at all and came to the conclusion that the dentist we had as children just filled for the sake of it... I only had 4 anyway. And we weren't allowed sweets either.
ubereglu
Dentists are very expensive. Luckily there are lots of dentists where I live, so it's not overly hard to find one in a hurry. My dentist went private, but took all his old NHS children patients with him, so I'm still treated under the NHS, which is just as well with the amount of orthodontic work I've had to have. He is a very good dentist, but I won't go over to him when I'm out of full time education as he is VERY expensive.
Cooks
just come back from the dentist myself, didn't feel like going as I have a terrible cold, but I had two x rays and a check up and it was just over £16! which I thought wasn't bad..... that's where the good part ended.. she then gave me the quote for my white filling I wanted to replace an old one....... £95!!!!!!!!!! flaming daylight robbery... Bah Hug!!!! Both the kids are fine, no fillings ever for them so they are doing ok. Both need Orthodontic treatment though, but on the bright side they will have a perfect smile after
Lydia
Because of residue left by my asthma inhalers I have to see the hygienist every 3 months - at £46 a go! Add to that the dentist check up twice a year at £48 a go and someone somewhere is making a tidy sum out of me!
Guest
get dental insurance, it's worth it IMO. We pay £30 to BUPA for both of us, we had over £200 of treatment btwn us recently and can claim most of it back. I hate silver fillings so had composite ones, one of them cost £126, I'm so vain
Rhapsody
I am curently in the middle of extensive dental work all being done privately (no NHS here) but it's money I've saved by not going on the family ski holiday every year. Phonix
I hate dentists at the mo. The one I had at home never done anything properly (as I found out when I started seeing the new one) and as a result I needed a tooth removed (her removed the wrong one), three large fillings (cos he had't done them soon enough) and also her had never s"Ooops, word censored!"ed them or anything so when I got that done by the new one my whole mouth was full of blood. YAK! Add to that I still need to get the three fillings (I can't afford £60 each right now) and one of my teeth snapped due to the need of the filling and I can't get an appointment to get that sorted for ages. Add to all of that, that when I filled in the form to see if I could get gov help to pay costs -NO! Well I can if the one treatment amounts of over £296 which aparantly no one treatment does!!! And when I called to ask why the ans was no, it because im a student so im assessed as having a full student loan that would be available to me to use to pay the bills, even when I don't have a loan!! x
Egluntyne
Forgot to say, I'm in Westfield, a local healthcare plan. I will get around 2/3 of it back. It is a fantastic scheme, which pays up for physio, osteopathy, contact lenses, chiropody etc.
Lesley
I have a Boots dental plan - hardly worth the money now though as they keep deleting things from the list that they will cover
Egluntyne
Try **Westfield**, Lesley, they might be able to help. They are Sheffield based but there are healthcare providers outside Sheffield who are in the scheme.
Chicken Licken
I have had 2 wisdom teeth removed and a filling replaced - all since september - I could probably have come close to buying a cube for the amount it has cost - or a holiday for that matter. Still fingers crossed I will not need anything doing for a very long time and my mouth is so much more comfortable without the wisdom teeth!!
