Lesley Posted September 23, 2006 Author Share Posted September 23, 2006 Don't worry Clare - they seem to be late hatching, they may hang on until Sunday. Our next are due Sunday as well! I have to keep watching for the eggs to pip as I then have to stop the automatic cradle from turning and increase the humidity. We can't decide what to do with No.5 - he is really struggling I read on P P that you shouldn't help chicks to hatch as if they are not strong enough to get out of the shell, then they just aren't strong enough to live. We decided to take this course (no intervention) with any of ours should it happen. However..... I felt so sorry for the little one trying to hatch so I moved the top part of the shell slightly, just to help It had been 2 days trying to break out and you could hear it cheeping and see its' beak peeping out of the shell. Lauren and Jake had been watching it as well and when it was mostly there I just moved the shell so it could stand up and start fending for itself. It just isn't thriving. I have been feeding it water and Avipro mixed with a little bit of yoghurt and very soggy chick crumbs. It seems to perk up a bit but then can't walk and slumps in the box or gets onto its back and then can't move I can't decide what to do I know it may be kinder to cull at this point but it's difficult and I can't help trying to help it out.................. If it helps i hatched some chicks a few years ago at school with some students. We did help the chicks by moving small bits of shell and gave them lots of TLC over about a week and they came good in the end, all fluffy & full of life! They are the cutest! The Dogmother Posted September 24, 2006 Share Posted September 24, 2006 So sorry to hear about number 5 Lesley We've got some good news - went wading out in the pouring rain this morning at 8am to find that the cream legbar egg has hatched and we had a damp but very cute chick. This one has now dried out and is all yellow and easter chick cute. The other two fertile barnie eggs have pipped and the membrane on one has broekn. Lavinia is helping it out of the egg, there is some bloog around the edge of the egg, but the chick is still peeping so I'm not concerned at this stage. The other egg has a hoel in the shell but the membrane is still intact, so a little longer to go.
