The Dogmother
It's a hard decision to make Hon, and a brave one too. Don't worry, we've all been there and cried buckets too.
mostin
I am so, so sorry darling . She is one special little lady and will leave a big hole in you and K's hearts I know. You've been struggling with this decision and it's the hardest one to make as we all love them so much. She has had the best time with you two that a chicken could have. Big hugs, and thinking of you both xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
HENthusiastic
Thank you all so much. It is such a big help having you guys alongside me emotionally. I have got her booked in tomorow afternoon at 1.30. I thought it would feel easier, because we've been pondering for so long. But now we've made the decision I cant believe how I feel. HENthusiastic
I left work early and spent a couple of hours with Matilda. She came out into the snow with the others for a little while before going back under her house to hide. She had some treats to eat and I took some photos of her. I didn't want to handle her in case it wasn't comfortable for her, so I gave all the others extra cuddles instead. Having made the decision, I was looking at her with fresh eyes. Although she does have moments when she seems okay, generally she's not a happy girl. So althought I'm dreading tomorow, I'm surer now that this is the best thing for her. laurmurf
Oh Hen, you've tried everything to support her and keep her going as happily and healthily as you possibly could. You saved her from the hell she had lived all her days since hatching and gave her the most wonderful months to make up for it. Even this decision- which has been heartbreaking for you both - has been done in her very best interests. She's such a luckly girl, be proud of what you have done and are doing for her. sending you both lots of love, with much sympathy for what you're going through, xxx
HENthusiastic
Thanks everybody for all your support and understanding. Matilda is now in chicken heaven, where I am sure she will be calmly but assertively taking charge and planning an attack on all the heaven aboding cats. My vet was fantastic and made it as 'nice' as it could possibly be. She agreed that it was time to let her go. She gave her gas first (through a little cone shaped face mask) to send her to sleep and then an injection. She talked me through it all and said that she would give a big deep breaths and then go. The vet held her little foot as if she was comforting her in the final moments. I stroked her and talked to her until she went. She had a good retirement of 9 months. R.I.P. I'm so sorry it's over, she was very special and will be fondly remembered . I'm now having to find somewhere to cry in a corner at work after reading your last post. Bless her little feathery soul, I hope she is making those cats run xxxxxxxxxxxx
The Dogmother
I feel very sad for you guys. Take comfort that she had a fantastic retirement and a dignified passing - more than anyone could wish for. Make time to say goodbye to her with a burial or little ceremony, then enjoy your other girlies. CXXXXOOOO

Your vet sounds very good and understanding (especially the fact he gave her some sleeping gas 1st) so she wouldnt have known anything about the injection. to you aswell for staying with her, I know I couldnt have done it. Take care and time will heal. xx
moomin
Same as everyone else really, you are so brave to have stayed with her so that she had you there with her till the end. I did that once when I had one of our little Guinea Pigs put to sleep, so I know how upsetting it is Hope you feel better soon X

HENthusiastic
Thanks everybody. I've just been to check on my four girls. May is sleeping where Matilda always used to sleep! The vet is fantastic. SHe asked if we wanted to spend time with Matilda after she had passed away, she offered us a cup of tea when I was and she didn't charge us a penny (its usually a flat £30 just for the consultation). We're all different, I dont know why, but I really felt I needed to be with her until she had gone. It is hard, but its also comforting how peaceful and gentle it was.
