Angels4
I used to LOVE going to the Woolworths we had here in Boston with my grandmother. We used to go into the city and take a Swanboat Ride in the Commons and then off to the Woolworths lunch counter for a BLT sandwhich and tomato soup. http://cosmos.bcst.yahoo.com/up/player/popup/index.php?cl=11279697
ubereglu
Our's closed down yesterday. There wasn't a lot left, but my sister managed to buy several bargains as everything went down to 80% off. That meant she finally got series five of Gray's anatomy for only £8. Geoid
The Woolworths in Chiswick has already been converted into a Waitrose.
susanbb
The local one here closes on the 5th, but the one I grew up with in Scotland closed yesterday. I've got so many lovely memories of Woolies. I got my first pair of jeans from there. It will be sadly missed . I hope the workers manage to find themselves jobs after this. A chickychickychick-ENN!!
It looks so wrong with all the empty aisles. I almost got choked up yesterday in one. On the plus side, I'm hoping all these chains going bust will eventually result in smaller businesses getting a look in as people have to reassess how and where they shop. I can hope. Jillus
My first Saturday job was in Woolies, I got 14/9d for working ( Had to pay 3d for national insurance) I worked on the Christmas decorations counter where we stood within the counter. I remember the wooden floorboards, the warm peanuts by the door and the great lunches which cost about 6d in the staff canteen!
Seagazer
My first saturday job was in Woolies and I had a temporary Christmas job there about 5 years ago. I think it is really sad. All we have left in our little high street is coffee shops, restaurants and take away places. We have a Boots and Superdrugs and not much else. There are already about 4 empty shops. Lots of charity shops as well. There used to be a sewing/knitting shop but that went so now Woolies is going it will be harder to get all of those sorts of things for people that can't drive. Your kitchenware shop is so good I travel 30 miles to go there! Much better than Rochester's one. Nowhere near as snooty. And your little record shop is brilliant. People in Whitstable's shops are so friendly. I love Tea and Times and Samphire for lunch and dinner too. I love that there are so many independent shops doing quite well. I hate generic high street shops. Your butchers and bakers and veg shops are all ace, and that little shop which sells hippy bits and spices and licorice wood from jars. I LOVE Whitstable! Tessa the Duchess
Our local Woolies closed on Saturday too, I will miss it terribly, such a useful shop with many happy memories for me Ours was quite a large one, so goodness knows what will replace it, I am hoping it is not going to be a Tesco The very large branch in our biggest nearby shopping mall hateful place, closed and apparently it is going to be a Primark I understand that things have to change but why always for the worse? crazygal
I was in our local Woolies today and felt almost guilty as I bought cut price things- a pair of trackie bottoms for ES cost about a pound, and Pop Party 6 cd for 5 pounds for DD. There's a Tesco opposite so it won't become Tesco, but what? I suspect there are going to be lots of empty premises soon...

Dodge
I was in Woolies in Croydon on Saturday, at about 3pm. There were huge queues and I picked up half a dozen CD's and half a dozen DVD's including Take That and Sissor Sisters both priced at £17.95. I then waited in the queue for 20 mins with no idea how much anything I had was being discounted. When it was my turn at the till, the girl told me that all CD's and all DVD's were now £2-00 each. WHOO HOO At the back of the till were all the Blu Ray films, X Box 360 and PS3 games. I got the girl to bring them all over for me to see, and I ended up with 10 Blu Ray films at £8-00 each and a dozen X Box latest games at £5-00 each and 3 full price PS3 games at £5-00 each. I was amazed that there was anything left to buy. As I was going out, they made an anouncement that EVERYTHING was now 90% off. I nearly got killed in the rush. Cate in NZ
Would that I lived in Whitstable - I live in Sidcup Ah. I thought you lived in Whitstable. Someone on here does. Can you gaze at the sea from Sidcup?! Being pretty familiar with Sidcup myself (used to work in the hospital there, and DS went to a big all boys school in Sidcup) I can answer with some authority that it's impossible to gaze at the sea from Sidcup . It's so sad to hear of Woolworths stores closing , to me they're just synonymous with the old-fashioned British High Street.
Bassett
I was in Bexleyheath today and the Woolies there has now shut down. It seemed really sad to see the big empty shop! Plus it left me with a big problem - Where can I go to buy presents for the children to take to parties????? It will be interesting to see if another shop moves into the old Woolies. I will really miss the Sidcup one though as it was just so handy for those last minute kiddies presents.
Clur
Where will I get cheap kids' wellie-boots from now?! Hope all the staff got paid ok - it amazed me how polite and helpful everyone was in our local store when they must have felt like walking out.... Mine were lovely too. Although they'd had to put up signs saying verbal and physical abuse will not be tolerated. Apparently they'd been copping it - people throwing stuff at them because 'the discounts weren't big enough'. Shocking isn't it?
Phonix
I got some great photos outside Woolies on boxing day (in the evening when it was closed) with my (not-so-sober) friends mourning the loss lol
iar fach goch
went to our local woolies today, it was so sad, and I felt guilty buying bits and pieces. I feel so sorry for the staff, who have always been so polite and helpful, having to work especially hard at the moment, knowing that come Sunday they will be out of work. I have decided to go in on Saturday with a few bottles of wine for them, hopefully it will go a little way to making them feel better.
