melly264
Ginger passed away in the night, am feeling a bit Am worried that we may have missed something, and don't want to loose the others due to our lack of experience. She was a bit off late in the day yesterday, tired/sleepy and hunched. But there had been 2 odd crumpled shell only eggs laid in the last 3 days (could have been anyones tho!), and she was always a bit funny for a day after a funny egg so I thought it was just that. Obviously if she was still not right in the morning we would have done a trip to the vet. We were debating last night wether to bring her in the utility room to sleep, but figured that if she was feeling low the last thing she needed was to be freaked out by moving into a lonely box for the night. Her eyes were still bright so we figured extra straw in the nest box would be fine, and off she went for an 'early night'. The only odd symptom that we know was that she was drinking lots as of late afternoon yesterday, and when I cuddled her she leaked some water, also there was a small puddle of water by her head where I found her this morning. We have wormed them reciently (2 months ago I think). Any ideas?
Egluntyne
Sad news. I'm sure you did the right thing in leaving her with her companions. Drinking copious amounts is sometimes a symptom of a kidney problem.
Guest
ahhh, so sorry do you check their crops in the morning to see if they're empty or at least smaller than the previous day? Does her crop feel hard/blocked? The only thing I can think of is maybe she had an impacted crop that was stopping anything getting down. do any of them seem to eat the straw at all? melly264
we had checked all of their crops the other day and I thought they were ok. My hubby reminded me that we have bait out at the moment to kill off rats, definately no-where where the chickens can get to, but could rats pass on the poison in any way? ie urine? I haven't seen any of them eating straw
