Chooks Aloud

Not a good start to 2009

New year's day this year was spent nursing my little Chico. She really has never recovered from the moult - it really does take it out of them. I thought she was getting stronger, she was pecking Darla away from the food last week, but on New Year's eve during the day she was just hunched up not eating/drinking so she spent the day inside with us with me trying to entice her with food/water.

I put her back with all the other girls at bedtime, but next morning I could tell something was wrong. I ran down to the eglu, let the others out and found her really cold on her side. I brought her in put her on a wrapped heat pad and syringed water slowly into her. This is how the day was spent with her being nursed. She seemed to be waiting for my daughter to arrive home (it's her chook) to say goodbye.

Chico stayed with us being nursed but at midnight I put her into a box for the night with the heat pad, and wrapped her in some towels to keep her warm. I put the lid on her to make her feel safe.

The spooky thing is that once the lid was on, and I had said my goodbyes, I looked up and asked (to whoever was watching over her) to take her, as I did not want her to suffer anymore. I walked out of the room and then heard a loud thumping noise coming from the box, I rushed back into the room opened the lid and found that Chico had gone.

She was one of my original Omlet girls and I can't tell you how sad I was when she passed away. Still, whilst on this earth she was very much loved and had a really good life.
