Edna is poorly

Recommended Posts

Just want some advice if possible as I'm not sure what to do.

One of my pekins, Edna, who has never been the most tame hen, suddenly stopped running away from us and was letting us stroke her a couple of days ago.

Then my hubby came in and said she'd been attacked and her comb was bleeding. I think I vaguely remember reading that when a hen is sick the other hens can tell and this can lead to an attack.

When he went out to close the cube door Edna hadn't gone to bed and was sleeping underneath the cube. The same happened last night and he had to lift her into bed.

This morning she didn't want to come out so we lifted her out but she just sat all puffed up not moving.

I have her inside with me now, she's eaten some food but has stayed puffed up and is not moving. She's very pale and is mainly sleeping.

I'm not sure whether I should be taking her to the vets as I think they wouldn't know what was wrong and as she doesn't appear to be in any pain I feel like she might be better off going quietly at home if that is on the cards.

Hope she picks up ok. Is she drinking? Can you get fluids into her to keep her hydrated?

You don't say how old she is but I presume she's laying? Has she laid anything recently or do you think she may be trying to pass a soft egg which is making her feel grotty? Presume she's wormed etc?

Someone with more know-how will be on soon I suspect, but hope she gets well soon.

Thanks Clur.

She has some water next to her but I've not seen her take a drink.

I don't think she could be egg bound as she is a pekin and stopped laying a couple of months ago for the winter and isn't due to lay again until round about February.

I think she is around 3 - 4 years old - we were told she was 'last years' chick' when we got her in Oct 07

Well I decided to pop Edna back in the cube when the others went to bed so that they can all snuggle up and keep her warm - also, I didn't want to keep her separated from the others too long. She has been eating ok today and sleeping a fair bit, and took no pursuading whatsoever to eat some dried worms

The girls haven't been wormed for a while - I will start them off on that again in the morning. All my girls were treated with baytril for a couple of weeks in October for a respiratory infection that two of them had, but we had to treat the whole flock. I suppose it's possible that Edna may have picked up another infection. I will have a listen to her chest tomorrow.

Thanks everyone x
