Revisited topic; Cadburys- creme eggs, free range or not?

Recommended Posts

Last year the BHWT campaigned for Cadbury to use free range egg in their creme eggs and I thought this had been achieved. They even received 'good egg' award from CIWF because of this.

I decided to double check to see if this had happened as creme eggs are being sold again this year. The wording in their reply seems to suggest that they are NOT yet using free range egg! This is so disappointing :(

Perhaps the BHWT could confirm, I will mail them and ask but here's the response from Cadbury...

Thanks for your recent enquiry regarding the very small amount of egg we use in our Crhme Eggs.

We are pleased to advise that we are committed to changing the egg ingredient to one from a free range source. This change is in line with our broader sustainability agenda, and reflects our developing consideration of animal welfare.

Thank you once again for taking the time and trouble to contact us.

Regards

I've replied back as follows and will let you know what they say...

Please advise me when this change is likely to take place. I believe you received a good egg award from Compassion in World Farming because you were going to start using free range eggs but this was last year.

I would really like to know when the change is likely to happen.

Regards

I'm really gutted as I thought this had all been sorted! It annoys me the way they keep saying "the really small amount we use". This small amount equates to thousands of battery hens

Good for you Poet ! How come they received the award when there was no proof that they had changed their ways? Any idea?

I've mailed CIWF and Jane Howarth, I've sent them the response from Cadbury so I'll let you know what they say. It's upsetting isn't it :?

Certainly is, it's always the big boys too isn't it? I think they make all the right noises then conveniently forget about it as they're too busy counting their vast profits.

they've had over a year to sort it out too

I must admit that although I have ALWAYS bought free range eggs (before the girls) I never gave the eggs incorporated in a product a second thought. They are somehow 'hidden' aren't they?

Now I always check, and it's disappointing how many manufacturers still use battery eggs.

I made some lovely lemon curd last week because I couldn't find one that specified FR eggs. It was so much nicer, and so simple to make I'll never buy it again.

If a giant like Hellmans (sp?) can do it, then Cadburys certainly can :?

Yes, I totally agree but do you think Hellmans would have been open to change if their product hadn't been predominately egg based? How many people actually knew that there was any egg content at all in creme eggs? There must be numerous companies out there producing products that have egg content that we wouldn't have thought of. They all need to change.

I've had an e-mail from Buffie, she's investigating so best wait until we hear back from her before we take any action but great to know you're willing to send a mail :D

Call me stupid if you want to but it hadn't even occured to me that there was real egg in a creme egg, I thought they were all sugar and glucose syrup.

Does this mean I ahve to boycot Cadbury's now? I know it's not fine quality chocolate but there's something comforting about it sometimes that nothing else seems to match.

Sara, that's for you to decide but I'm just avoiding eating creme eggs. I expect I might have the odd choccie bar though.

I just do my best to avoid food that contains battery egg rather than boycotting the whole company. Tesco is an exception though but that's another story
