MedusA
How could I be so stupid? I sold a spare set of wooden roosting bars on eBay and forgot to weigh them, so I just put my standard P&P charges (£5.00). Of course today, when I went to the post office, they said they were too heavy for 2nd class post and the cost would be £11.10 1st class or £10.99 Parcelforce!!! Is there anything I can do, or have I just got to bear the cost (and end up out of pocket) and learn a valuable lesson? Edited to change title. Blackrocksrock
Would it be cheaper to send them separately in 2 parcels?
chickencam
It might be worth looking into a courier, we had a small rabbit/poultry house to use as an isolation unit collected from a shop in North Wales and delivered to us for £6.99. It might also be worth contacting the buyer to see if they will split the difference with you on postage. How have you packaged them? I wouldn't have thought that they were that heavy. There is a big difference in the weight of some cardboard boxes. We pack a lot of things in a good layer of bubble wrap then thick polythene rubble sacks £1 for about 8 from Poundland. Ain't Nobody Here
How annoying . I think the 2 parcels idea of Susan's sounds a good one . Alternatively, contact the seller and if he/she is a nice person (must be if they want roosting bars ) they might come to some arrangement with you. Cooks
there are some very cheap couriers out there now, I would probably look into that like the previous poster said... cant hurt can it. That's exactly what I've been saying to everyone, the royal mail prices are extortionate!
abwsco
Sorry, but annoying as it is if it was me I'd just take it on the chin as it was your mistake and not theirs. I know that as a buyer I wouldn't be happy being asked for more money towards the postage.
Egluntyne
I have an idea that as the terms were already agreed, you will be responsible for the postage. Unfortunate though it is, the buyer would be able to give negative feedback, and possibly start a dispute if the price is altered after the item has been bought. Let's hope that it will be cheaper to send the bars as 2 separate items.
MedusA
Thanks for all your replies guys. I knew I could rely on your helpfulness. But now I'm just cross! Let me explain..... I checked online for other couriers, but I couldn't find a local one cheaper. So then I checked the Royal Mail website, and having had the parcel weighed at 1.56kg, the website quoted the cheapest way to send it as Standard Parcel rate for £4.20!!!!! So I took my parcel to a different Post Office in Wylde Green and they confirmed the postage was indeed £4.20. Apparantly Erdington Post Office is trying to get people to use Parcelforce, so aren't giving customers this option. I feel a strongly-worded letter coming on! Surely it cannot be right to withhold information to customers in this way? So, problem solved, but I'm left with a bitter taste in my mouth. I will ALWAYS weigh my items in future, so at least I've learned a valuable lesson today. Thanks again.

And we wonder why they are closing post offices - that one isn't doing itself any favours is it! Glad you have it sorted anyway

Guest
that's disgraceful, I'd get them to send you compensation for your messing about. At least they could send you a book of 1st class stamps or something!
Janty
That is disgusting customer services. Not what you would expect from the PO.
Ain't Nobody Here
That's ridiculous . I'm glad you're not going to be out of pocket after all though .
chickencam
I thought it sounded far too expensive I do quite a lot of ebay and I am getting pretty good at estimating weights and postage and roosting bars do not weigh that much. I would write that strongly worded letter if i were you
Seagazer
I bet that would be against some regulation or other. I would definitely complain about it. Glad you got it sorted in the end.
MedusA
Thanks again guys. I will definitely do a letter. Just need to compose my thoughts so it doesn't turn into a rant.
MedusA
Just popped on to add something which made me smile....the feedback from my buyer. Item so clean, like new! Arrived quickly, honest P&P. Absolutely brilliant! At least somebody was happy with the postage!
