I just popped up the road to get more Aubiose for the girls and man next door where they sell chickens, and where I got Sugar and Cocoa from, was there as he remembered me, I said I was getting two more but couldn't get one from him because he doesn't do blue/green egg layers, he said he is getting some in! and will ring me friday!

 

He said the bluebelle is no problem and he will reserve them for me together with their own colour coded leg band on for me until I was ready to take them So I will speak to him Friday then...

 

He even remembered I loved the bluebelles with some brown on their chest! He's a lovely man and they are all just lovely healthy clean kept birds.

 

So blow me over with a feather... this is becoming a roller coaster event..

We were quite fortunate with our hens as our breeder lives in a village about a mile and a half away. He does all sorts and reasonably cheaply too. We bought our bluebelles for £9.50 each back in 2005. Molly and Spice cost the same amount each too, but they were only aged 9 and 11 weeks then.

Columbines and skylines are the same hybrid (a cream legbar cross), just different names at different places. I have 2 skylines and they're just lovely. One's extremely friendly and is a wonderful pet.

Where did you get yours from?

I found a cream legbar pullet last year, and she's from up the road, so I might pop up and ask where she's from. It also egrees ( sorry) with them being flighty and running away.

 

 

School might be hatching some eggs, and I might be getting the eggs, so I was going to see if I could get some fertile blue eggs and try to hatch them.

yes you cant get better I think! He was saying that some skylines he's had are greyer in their feathering and some browner, so what would I like if I had the choice?? I said I dont mind as long as I get one! and that it was a nice contrast against the bluebelle.

All five of my pullets came from Pear Tree Farm - one being a Cream Legbar - she is a real character, but of all of the hens, she is the only one who will not tollerate being handled.

 

She's not started laying yet, but Chris as Pear Tree said most of the Legars he has are laying Olive coloured eggs...

 

Ooh, can't wait to see which colour Evadne lays - Madbird seeing we both got ours from Chris we will have to compare pictures and notes. When do you get your girlie (Evadne joined us on the 31/10 at about 16 weeks old I think.

 

 

Loopyloo a quick tip on getting green or blue eggs from Skylines or Columbines. When you are choosing which one have a look at their ear lobes and that will tell you what colour egg they will lay...

This is the best picture I have of my Cream Legbar's earlobe but doesn't look blue more yellowy green , any ideas on this one?

Looks quite greeny to me helen you will probs get green or maybe an olive coloured egg from her

Definately ... I'll try and get a photo Lady Legbar's ear to post on here too (hers are definately looking green). We just missed each other was we picked up our pullets from Pear Tree on the 2nd Nov... I think he said LL was approx 20 weeks. I must say though that Evadne has a MUCH better topknot that LL - am jealous!

Crumbs - my barnie cost 25 quid - she was only 8 - 10 weeks old! I think they saw me coming. I paid £50 for them both

I cant remember what I paid for my girls agbout £12 I think. Which is what the bluebelles are as well. The skyline he told me I can have for £15.

Hi Moomin, is Barnie a pure breed like Bobbie and Skye? I would say you paid around the right price... I think ubereglu was talking about hybrid pullets (Bluebelles)

 

Although having said that I have seen Columbines and Skylines advertised for £20-£25!

have you bought them yet? just to say, although sometimes you get lucky and you get friendly bluebelles and skylines (like mine were) they are not naturally friendly birds. if you are getting a bird to be a pet and for your kids to hold then maybe youd prefer to get something like a goldline, which is a good beginner bird

Yep, well he's a very good chicken man!!! They're perfectly healthy and are beautiful! I was looking around for those breeds at a similar age on pother websites and was amazed at bhow expensive some of them were. Mind you, the only downside to buying chooks from him as you generally don't have a large selection, and he'll only sell them to you if you're a local-fair enough really.

 

Anyway...Brilliant news Loopyloo! You'll be very happy I'm sure...dreaming chickeny dreams tonight I bet! Your breeder sounds a bit like the one we got ours from-you're never quite sure what he'll have.

 

Unfortunately I'm not allowed anymore chooks for the mo.

I've checked the prices I paid - £12.50 for my Bluebelle and £20 for my Cream Legbar. My Bluebelle is very friendly and very greedy my legbar is a bit more wary of me perhaps because she is smaller than most of my girls and gets a bit trampled when they take sight of me. Hoping no doubt for some goodies .

Hi Madbird Barnie is my Barnevelder, Bobbie So yep, a purebreed.

I got my Eglu on 9/04 and I was so excited I called the breeder I had been recently talking to on the phone the day after on the 10th, (Simon from the Garden Hen), and just asked what he had. I would have taken anything I was that excited! So my two little girls were the only ones available that he didn't have reserved. As it happens they were 2 of my favourite breeds anyway But I think he sensed my desperation! I don't regret getting them though for whatever price - I am besotted

No, it's Molly, the cream legbar. She maybe lovely, but she's also a menace and likes to lay in the garden-well when she lays. I need the days to get longer again.
