chickenanne
I have mouth ulcers... two... and they're enormous, and sore. They're on my gum at the front, just under my top lip. And my top lip has swollen massively, and has gone numb, I look like I've had very, very bad collagen disaster. Any advice? Go home, sit on sofa, light fire, watch rubbish telly and sulk would be my prefered option, but am not sure the boss would be keen on that. Mrs Webmuppet
The dentists should be able to give you a prescription for some gloopy steroid stuff thats pretty good at sorting them out. Sorry can't remember the name of the stuff, all I remember is that it stuck my mouth together.
The Dogmother
The one you're searching for is Adcortyl in Orabase and it works. I was plagued by them after my wizzies were taken out - I found that using aloe vera toothpast and mouthwash has stopped them appearing. They are caused by a virus and appear when you're run down. Seagazer
I was going to suggest the Adcortyl as well. We always use it, marvellous stuff. Hope they go soon.
Cinnamon
Yes, I am using that now for an ulcer under my tongue. Its not the nicest stuff to use, but my goodness it does work Best to put in on before going to bed......
Olly
If you're regularly plagued by them, try eating more nuts. The dental hygienist advised me to do this - just a small amount a day (I think she was looking at my hips as she hastily added this!), I think they contain zinc or something that can prevent them developing. The Dogmother
That sounds about right Olly; zinc boosts the immune system.
sparkysmum
I am so sorry you are being bothered with mouth ulcers but pleased to see this thread My 10yr old daughter seems to get them all the time. Can you buy Adcortyl over the counter or do you need a prescription I've only ever giver her Bonjella & it seems pretty useless
Cinnamon
Over the counter, from the pharmacy. Not sure if it has an age limit though

ali-s
Jack used to suffer with mouth ulcers all the time, for years . After reading a topic in the Green Thinking forum about Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (industrial floor cleaner) in toothpaste I switched to Aloe Dent toothpaste which is SLS free. Jack has been mouth ulcer free for nearly a year I also use it as my mouth was always sore and my gums bled, these symptoms have gone
Egluntyne
Use a toothpaste that doesn't contain sodium wotsit sulphate. I found it made a huge difference.

I wonder if it is something to do with SLS. We eat a fairly healthy diet so don't think its that so much. I might give this a go.
ali-s
I buy the aloe Dent toothpaste from Holland and Barrett.
sparkysmum
Hi folks, got the Adcortyl from the chemist. Hope it works, thanks for the suggestion. Was intrigued at the possibility that Sodium Laurlyl sulphate might actually be causing the mouth ulcers. Googled SLS + mouth ulcers and found studies which suggest that SLS is thought to increase the incidence of mouth ulcers Going to look for SLS free toothpaste now . Yorkshire Pudding
Does the SLS free toothpaste still have fluoride in it? As we don't suffer with ulcers I would hesitate to switch to one without. I have had tiny ones in the past and found that baby teething powder (Teetha or the Boots equivalent) really sorted out the pain and swelling. We are careful about SLS on skin though, as both boys have mild eczema and SLS is one of the worst culprits in setting it off. I used to have to weigh it out as a lab chemical - horrendous stuff, I had to wear gloves and a face mask as it's very fine and gets everywhere. I hope the Adcortyl helps! Chickpea
Oh what a timely thread to come across! For the past two days I've been suffering with a huge ulcer on my gum where it joins the cheek and it's been killing me everytime I laugh or smile, consequently since I'm quite a smiley person I've been walking round with a lopsided grin on my face today! My fiancé has bought me some mouthwashy stuff which looks nasty and quite against our green policies so I must have been moaning a lot recently!! Minnie the Moocher
SLS is in lots of things, it's a foaming agent and is thought to have links to certain cancers. I always check the labels, but it's difficult to avoid. It's an industrial strength cleaning fluid used on floors. Lovely.
Minnie the Moocher
Have just reread my last post which sounds scary, but I lost my father a few years ago to the big C (he was still in his fifties) and it does make you more aware. Sorry if I scared anyone.
Chook n Boo Mum
I always use good old salt & water, but have used Aloclair in the past. Neither are too horrendous - unless the ulcer is "raw" when the salt is scream inducing !! Hope all your ulcers clear soon, they are dreadful. **whispers..I'm not suffering at the moment Sha x
chickenanne
THANKYOU so much for the advice!!! It's now LOADS better, still there, but not particularly sore or anything. My top lip is now normal, so that I can smile etc without it being sore.... amazing how much cheerier I feel jsut because I can smile. I'm going to be cutting out all SLS things as far as possible, too now, I have eczema so could be a good idea to avoid in soaps too. Once agan, a huge thanks for your help and advice! The Dogmother
I buy the aloe Dent toothpaste from Holland and Barrett. I buy it locally too, and their mouthwash it also good. SLS removes the protective coating on skin, so that might leave it open to attack from bacteria and viruses... just a guess but it sounds right to me
ali-s
Does the SLS free toothpaste still have fluoride in it? ! The AloeDent toothpaste we use does not have fluoride in it. I am going to H&B tomorrow so I will look at their other SLS free toothpastes and check for you.
The Dogmother
I tend to mostly use the Aloe Dent toothpast, but use a regular one (for the flouride) once or twice a week.
Valkyrie
I used to get them so often, so sympathise with you. Nowadays I rarely get them at all, but then only if I am really run down - don't know whether that is to do with age on my part. Not so with my mum who always suffers - and still does - enormous great things. She uses Bonjela - I did too, but I kept slurping it, so I let them run their course without resorting to pharmaceutical help. Once someone told her to put salt on it. Whatever you do - DO NOT PUT SALT ON IT! We had to pull her off the ceiling (slight exaggeration)! I think that the well-meaning person probably meant a salt water solution, which cleanses and helps heal.
