Richard T
Blimey! You give a man one book of quotations and off he bloomin' well goes! Other quotations: "Son, whether you get married or stay single, you're doing the wrong thing." - Groucho Marx. The Dogmother
The two eggs they gave us were great! Nice big yolks!! Yumm. I still can't get over how yummy freerange organic eggs are Brian; my chooks freerange for most of the day, so they eat lots of green stuff as well as their pellets, this makes the yolks bright orange and extra yummy. I try not to think about all the worms anu bugs they eat when i am eating their eggs though
Dark_Storm_01
Well, no matter how bad that may or may not be to you, just be glad their not being fed all that chemical yuck that the poor battery hens are fed! We had 2 Old Cotwold Eggs (The Cream Legbar ones), which I scrambled for breakfast, and the yolks, though darker than the battery eggs we were forced to buy last week (don't ask ) they still weren't as yellow as the ones Jason and Sarah gave us. With regards to the chooks - Jason gave me his Gingernut to hold, and I can see why holding the legs is important. Not only does it support them, it stops them scrabling on your clothing. I couldn't get hold of one of the legs, and I now need to get the dirt of my jacket which I'm not bothered about - I've had worse then dirt on my clothes. With regards to the Eglu... Its one thing "knowing" its dimensions and its another thing to see it - its HUGE! I must say I really DO WANT ONE!!!!!! (or three ) But unless I can just net off a big area of grass for them - without putting up fencing - I can't see us having chooks for a few years yet - which really upsets me - coz now I've seen them I really want a couple (I've only ever seen chickens from the other side of a fence, aged 6). Although, Jason did confirm what many of you Miss Pepperpot owners say about the breed not being overly friendly - they came over to me when I held my hand out (with or without pellets ) and it was funny to watch them chase eachother for a piece of bread. Grabbing it from eachother. To be honest though, I would like to consider the other breeds. e.g. the Black Rock, or the possibly Faverolle - although with the former I would have to build my own coup (which wouldn't be too hard). We both had a really good time. I loved watching them scrable in the dirt for seeds etc... The chooks were especially funny when Jason gave them some leaves... Gobble gobble and they were gone. Greedy blighters! I would really like to get some, and if I can do it without actually having fencing, let me know (and let me know if I can't as well ) I would also like to thank Jason and Sarah, we did enjoy it, and if we find anyone else who is interested, we'll tell them to have a look at yours. Cinnamon
Hi, I am glad it went well, & it sounds like you had a great time & are "sold" on the Eglu About fencing off the garden......quite a few of us have now made pens for our girls to live in as it gives them more room,& keeps the garden looking good I think there is a sticky about it somewhere, with links to pictures of home made pens. Ours was really simple to knock up,& has worked well.We use bark chippings as a floor, which the girls turn over therefore keeping it clean of poo, & freh (ish) smelling So if you have the room,or an area in the garden in mind, this might be worth thinking about. It also means you only need buy the Eglu body, which is cheaper
The Dogmother
Glad to hear that it went well Russell. Omlet are now supplying other types of hen apart from the ginger nut range and pepperpot; I went to the office this morning to pick up some goodies and they definitely had some ligth sussex type birds and what looked like bluebelles in the runs too. lightworker01
It would be nice to see Omlet supply a few other breeds. The Miss Pepperpots don't seem to be as friendly as Omlet say they are. Could someone tell us how much the reconditioned Eglu's usually go for please. Martin B
Carly is so friendly it is untrue. I think she is more cuddly than Lesley! It does often vary. Very good price though!
The Dogmother
A neighbour of mine has one of each, as does Clare* - they are all more friendly than my pure breeds
clare*
Bacon and egg are unbelievably friendly, both Gingernut rangers. Betty the miss pepperpot is ok, Speckle the Speckledy is very friendly. I had them at different times Betty and Speckle came later from another owner.
Lesley
Both our Pepperpots are very friendly. Why would you need to make a coop if you had Black Rocks ?
Sheilaz
It would be nice to see Omlet supply a few other breeds. The Miss Pepperpots don't seem to be as friendly as Omlet say they are. The and have been lovely Omlet birds, both of them! I have a complete soft spot for my Pepperpot, she's very friendly. There have been discussions about which of the two is the friendlier, but if one is more so, it doesn't mean that the other is unfriendly! As I recall, the general conclusion was that with most of the modern hybrids, it is more down to the individual personality of the bird as regards their manner, as opposed to the breed. Glad you enjoyed seeing the hens at Jason & Sarah's, they are a lovely couple, with beautifully kept birds.

Jason
It was good to meet you both Brian and Russell and we enjoyed chatting to you both about your plans for the future! As you can see the girls just aren't fazed by any number of people wandering round and having a look/cuddle as long as there are treats involved! Thanks for your kind words about me and the missus - I've even managed to convince her to get two more hens after we get married! As we said at the time - if you want to come back for another look you are more than welcome! Take care and it was lovely to meet you
buffie
Agree my pepperpot and gingernut are equally lovely and both friendly just different personalities. Charlie is lighter in weight so more inclined to pop over my wired borders! The girls get more friendly by human contact are are often a bit stand offish at fist. Claret's saw ours last weekend and commented on how friendly they were. Our banty's are not as friendly but still sweet BBx
The Dogmother
All the omlet hybrids I have met are friendlier than pure breeds for some reason. Sounds like our pure breeds are posh and stand-offish eh, Buff?
buffie
You wouldn't think Lottie was posh if you saw the chap that bred her, more mud in his house than I have in the garden and he called her titch 'not very posh at all' Thank goodness he gave her to me to live a cleaner life BBx
