21:00 Channel 4 tonight; Chickens, Hugh & Tesco too

Recommended Posts

Very interesting program. Quite thought provoking.

I shouted out load at the TV though when they were tossing those crates of baby chicks onto the floor of the sheds :shock: . I didn't realise what is was they were doing at first, I thought it must be chicken feed from the way they were throwing whatever it was.

that Media woman from Tesco was so rude and patronising but then that's what I've come to expect from Tesco.

They must be so confident (arrogant) about their market share that they can afford to insult people's intelligence. I hope the programme woke more people up to what Tesco stand for.

I totally agree. Did she think she was talking to a classroom of little children? If they are proud of how they raise their chickens they can put the word "indoor" on the label like to co-op do.

"We don't think our customers should feel guilty for buying a standard chicken"

:evil::evil::evil:

Maybe customers will feel guilty after they have seen the conditions a "standard" chicken is raised in. Those pictures of the packed sheds where the chickens couldn't move, and not just because of the lack of space. Which guidelines do they exceed??

This is all I could find on the Tesco website

Many UK customers are concerned about intensively reared chickens. All of our chickens are kept in conditions which allow us to ensure high welfare standards. We meet all legislation and industry standards, and in fact we go beyond these standards in many areas. Our approach is to provide customers with choice and the information necessary to make an informed decision. We aim to increase sales of chickens raised with higher welfare standards, such as our Willow Farm chicken, which will meet RSPCA Freedom Foods standards by early 20009, by raising awareness, and pricing these products competitively. We do not want to penalise customers on a tight budget by removing lower-cost products on which many rely.

20009! Those chickens have got a long time to wait!

I doubt people will starve for want of cheap chicken :roll:

I hate sloppy spelling on company websites, don't they proof read this gibberish before they upload it!

:lol::lol:

You are quite right Poet, Tesco's arrogance is beyond belief.

I sincerely hope that the Great British public after watching that program will see exactly what Tesco is really like when it comes to animal welfare. :shameonu:

Perhaps it wasn't a spelling mistake! :think:

That media woman was so irritating - so smarmy and smiley but saying absolutely nothing.

I wish they would all stop using the excuse "our customers are on tight budgets". One pound a week is not a lot. I bet if all standard chickens were removed tomorrow, those people who wanted to eat chicken could manage that extra pound, for example by putting back a multi-pack of crisps or a litre of cola.

It's not down to budget, it's down to choice. You decide which items you buy with your weekly budget, whether it's free-range chicken or value junk food.

I totally agree. When I was a child, chicken was a Sunday roast. It wasn't cheap.

If customers must be provided with a full range of prices to avoid them missing out on anything, where are the £1.99 Lobsters, the cheap Caviar etc? Steak isn't cheap and there are some who cannot afford to buy it. That's all right, they don't starve without it nor can they really be said to be missing out on vital nutrients. If we can't afford it, we can't have it. That's how it is.

I can't afford dinner at The Ivy. Should the restaurant have a dumbed-down, cheaper menu specially for me?

It's such a stupid argument, but although the Media woman was incredibly annoying, I have to admire her. She was excellent at her job and there is no way in the world that I could have done that. I just haven't got the nerve to ignore the arguments and keep trotting out the mantra as well as making it sound convincing.

p.s. I don't eat lobster, caviar or steak and I wasn't convinced by the woman's arguments!

Perhaps she should be a politician, she would make a good one!!

I very rarely go to Tesco, once in a blue moon but I have decided that from now on I will not be going there at all. They think might is right and they can do just whatever they want with no regard for anybody else. The profit they make is obscene and if they cannot put a little bit of that back into the animal's welfare then shame on them. Let's hope the British public vote with their feed and wake up to this tyrant of a company.

Rant over.

Nicola
