Is there a rule of thumb that can be applied to bantams when reading "chicken advice"

 

Cube takes 10 chickens - is there a multiplier for bantams or is it the same?

 

Is there a ratio for water and food? I am assuming so, as they are so much smaller?

 

Also is there any bantam specific suppliers as I am already planning getting more of these little gems...

Well, I've got 12 bantams Ted and they live very happily in the cube + extension. I've never bothered much about how muich they should eat, just made sure that the feeders are always topped up with fresh feed.

 

They have 2 feeders; one glug and one gravity feeder, plus two big bunny water bottles - seems to suit them just fine.

I agree with claret about 12 in cube as the eglu says 3-4 hens 4-6 bantams.

 

On the food thing apparently a bantams stomach is the size of a tennis ball and can hold around 30g.

 

Dont know many bantams suppliers but try practical poultry, pekin bantams and try the actual breed you are interested in's breed website

What were you thinking of adding?

 

I got a few of mine from an old bloke called Ted (just like the one off The Fast Show) near Reading. I don't have his details with me, but if you email barbara@omlet.co.uk I passed the details on to her. he's an old style poultry keeper and has lots of lovely girls.

it would be nice for ted to get bantams from ted... Would like blue eggs and brown eggs if poss (legbar/araucana/maran??) friendly birds. At the moment I have three pairs. Is it a good idea to keep pairs or can I go for singles?

It's always easier to introduce more than one bird to an existing flock (well that's my excuse anyway), provided you follow the introductions advice in the FAQ section.

 

I have different coloured egg layers - I get white, beuge, plum colured, dark brown, khaki and turquiose - they look so lovely together and the girls mix well as a flock too.

 

Have a look on the pekinbantams.com forum - they always have something available on there and it's coming up for the time when people will start hatching new stock.

She's not on that gallery (I gave up posting pix when the old version of the gallery kept goin gup the wall) The plummy coloured ones are the RIR bantam (well miniature strictly speaking)

The old Ruby in the photos is now an ex-hen and replaced by another Ruby (my daughter is never original at renaming )

What wonderful bantams. Lucille is very striking!! Which is the RIR? Bunty is lovely what is she? The new ruby and the old one are both beautiful as well...

Lucille was always delicate and passed away this winter. Roxanne is the RIR - handsome, glossy dark brown thing. Bunty is a white araucana who lays khaki eggs. I see they have anconas on that list - I have one and she has striking plumage and lays a decent sized white egg regularly.

 

That list looks good - I daren't go there; I would be coming away with even more girls

 

There are some pics on this page of when I first got my last lot of additions, the Ancona (Jude#2) is the striking small black and white thing.
