Cate in NZ
Thanks for the posting about the lamps Buffie. I'm seriously tempted to get one. I really dislike the longer nights and cold weather, and do get more lethargic and grumpy in the winter. At the risk of sounding hypochondriac I've wondered over the past couple of winters whether I might have a mild case of SAD. It might be worth giving a lamp a go. It can't hurt (except the bank account )........... and might just give me a happier winter
buffie
Well this morning is a typical SAD day, dull and dark, so I am going to have to have my 20 mins with my lamp. I'll have my breakfast with it I think. Oh I've run out of milk so no cuppa BBx
Laura & CTB
My lumie bodyclock lamp arrived yesterday so tried it out this morning - what a difference, I was wide awake 5 minutes before the alarm was due to go off and actually wanted to get out of bed. Should have got this ages ago.

The Dogmother
I'd love to give one of those lamps a try, but not convinced that I sit still long enough (except at work ) to get the benefit

I think it would be a brave soul that wears one of these in public. I'm planning on taking my light box to work, apparantly you can put it on top of the monitor or just next to you on the desk - heaven knows what my office cat is going to make of it - should I buy her some sunglasses? Budgies
Just to clarify - am I right in thinking that whilst the Lumie clocks gradually get brighter, thus waking you up, the light they emit is NOT the same wavelength as natural daylight? I have to use lamps in the winter to help combat my M.E. and found that a lightbulb that emits light of the same wavelength as natural daylight, plugged into a timer, does an excellent job! I just put in in my bedside lamp and set it to come on about an hour before I have to get up - and it costs a fraction of the price! buffie
Yes you can get lamps (light bulbs) it would depend on how much time you needed to spend in front of them to get a thorough treatment and with the lumie it simulates sunrise and this is proven to help with probs of waking up. My large therapy lamp does the treatment in 20 min and lamps couldn't do that. BBx
Budgies
You're spot on Buffie, of course - anyone who has been diagnosed with proper SAD would need the proper therapy lamps to treat their condition, and couldn't compromise. The lumie lamp alone would not be sufficient. But for anyone just finding it a bit of a struggle getting out of bed in the morning, either a lumie lamp or a switch/timer with daylight wavelength bulb would help. My version is admittedly not as gentle as "building" the light gradually over a period of time, but I have no trouble sleeping through when the light comes on, and I do feel more awake when the alarm goes off! buffie
I missed putting it on properly today and I just pressed the button to full sunlight, I was like a rabbit in headlights but it worked, not very gentle though I needed to use my lamp today but didn't, will have to have a good dose tomorrow am and need to bring it in from my therapy room BBx

The Dogmother
Yup, especially when she climbs in for a cuddle I don't really have any trouble waking up early in the mornings, unless I've had a night out on the tiles. I just feel more 'down' in the winter, which I guess tones down my usual hyper energy to normal levels. I'm a happier person in the summer and love the sunshine. Trish
Bit late joining this but just wanted to add that I got my clock last winter and it made a huge difference to me. I don't think it's SAD as such it's just that I'm useless if jolted awaked, ie a usual alarm clock, it takes me a couple of hours to come round. With the lumie clock I am awake 5-15 minutes before the alarm is set but I feel like I woke because I wanted to not because so rotten littel electronic dicatato screamed at me. Makes getting up on a dark morning much more pleasant
chocchick
Well we have 1 by me and Mikey still can see it. I would suggest a small lamp type therapy lamp to read by too as this will add the the effectiveness. Having said that the bodyclock on it's own will help. Exciting news about Jimmy's posted! BBx Poor the herd123 been reading your posts 8am is a working day, your OH sounds droconian OH is the opposite and won't get out of bed until at least lunchtime.
