I must admit they don't look as bad as I had expected, though their legs are very pale and their combs so huge- like big bits of bacon! Their beaks haven't been clipped though so I can tell they will be beauties now they are out in the air. I love your photos EB! You both look really happy!

Looking forward to comparing notes on how it all goes...I shall be up early tomorrow..

Aaaah! They are gorgeous aren't they  You will be amazed how quickly they come on too. When I got mine last week their eyes looked like the eyes of a dead bird, but now they are bright and shiny, and the girls are alert and very inquisitive. Their combs have shrunk a little and gone a deeper pink too, even in just a week.

Mine don't touch dry mash, but they love it made into a porridge with hot water, and I have been putting a little flaked tuna in too, to help with recovering feathers.

Mine need nails cutting too, but I am too scared to do it  I think I will wait until they are a bit more settled and take them to the vets for a pedicure, as I've heard it's easy to cut too far down if you don't know what you're doing.

Hope you all love watching your new girls as much as I love mine

Thanks for explaining EB!

It has just taken ages and a chicken fight to get ours in! We tried a gentle coax with a broom, tried shining a torch, and we couldn't get hold of them to place them in - then to my horror they started fighting with each other, well mainly Lily and Daisy.

DH then used the broom a little more forcefully and gradually pushed them into the eglu, whilst I shut the door......phew that was hard work and a little scary! Hope every night is not like that and that they are just sorting the pecking order out - Lily has been pecking the other 2 quite a lot this afternoon - makes our other girls look like angels  !

Will go out again in 20 minutes to check all is well.

it will all settle down eventually, I went thru it all so can safely say you'll be fine! ;) Ours knew where bed was after 3-4 nights of being wrangled.

Maud was a big bully when she got here and we had to seperate her a few times, put out extra food stations etc It's no wonder they behave the way they do, coming from the environment they've come from. They can unlearn that behavious with time, love and patience though.

Maud is now the softest, friendliest, cuddliest chicken ever. It's so heartwarming to see. They're such spirited, gentle creatures, it's incredible they can learn to trust people again but you'll see big improvements in time :D

I tried the torch trick but it failed and I ended up hauling them out and lonking them in the eglu once it was shut tight. I am a bit worried as Bubbles is tiny compared to Omar who is a big chicken by anyone's standards...but I trust they will sort it out their way. They have knocked the grub off its perch by going underneath it and the pecking order stuff is certainly starting already! Will be up early tomorrow! :D

My 4 are coming on too, one week on their combs are shrinking a bit and changing colour too, can't wait for their pasty little faces to colour up too!

They are still very jumpy at unusual (for that read "any" ) noises, but they are getting used to my 3 chooks coming round & poking their nosey little beaks in to say hello, also the dogs have been sniffing round to see what food has been thrown out. I haven't got used to the fact they lay on the run, today they've scratched all the hemcore over to one side like a snow drift - DD announced that while I was out they'd laid an egg.....just where the drift is  !!! I suppose I need to change the hemcore then?!

Ditto the toenails, I've got leg rings to attach too, so we can tell them apart easily, then they will be named properly, perhaps a job for tomorrow if it's dry & sunny. (Also got leg rings for the Orpies, not sure I'm looking forward to that!!)

Mine have a small pot of corn on the side of the run, which they love, a flat dish of dried mash, which they also snaffle happily, and the several pots of mash porridge disappear rapidly. They don't like grapes or sweetcorn, but do like sultanas in their teatime mash.

Maybe I'm lucky, but they have taken themselves off to bed from day one, no need for the broom nor the torch, although I had one to hand in case it was needed.

You are not alone in falling for them, they are adorable... Good luck with your newbies!

Thanks for all the tips guys. Have just been out to check and they are perching nicely but as far apart as they could be!! at least no poo in the nesting box perhaps, unlike my bruisers :?

I have only left out normal mash and water so far so will watch carefully tomorrow andd try them with porridge...how long does it take for them to get the hang of grugs and superglugs???
