What novel food does your hens eat

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone

We are trying to help are hen Baby to recover from her broken bone.

Apart from the usual food we have found she like spinach, apples, spouts,

cabbage and the latest thing Oatibix.

What does your hen like?

Best regards

mashed potato, soaked seeded batch bread mushed up with probiotic yoghurt, tinned sweetcorn, corn on the cob, mealworms, grapes, raisins, sultanas, chips, mixed corn, tinned tuna, tomatoes, strawberries, seed sticks.....

might be a good idea to give her some yoghurt as the calcium should help her heal quicker. Try mixing some yoghurt with a bit of mashed potato? Cherries are also good for joint pain. I bought some today and am going to de-stone them before trying our girls with them t'row.

Hi Ian & Valerie, glad to hear Baby is mending. WhenPenny was recovering from her broken foot we dosed her up with metacalm (pain killer & anti inflammatory which was prescribed for Sparky but the vet said would be ok for Penny) To increase her calcium we gave her (and still do) calcium carbonate (limestone flour) in her food daily. To build up her general reserves we made sure she had plenty of carbs and cooked her rice / pasta most afternoons. To her rice/ pasta or cereal treats we added whatever cooked veg was around. I have no doubt all her supplements + high carbs helped her recover. She really is a glossy girl now & you would never guess she had such a traumatic time just a few months ago :D:D Keep it up :D:D

I am not sure if this is novel or not, but here goes as my chooks devour absolutely everything.

They seem to love toast with marmite, cooked pasta, rice, spinach, lettuce, spring onion choppings, all leftover salad items, slugs, snails, worms, plant shoots, dandelions etc.

You name it, but I guess the marmite would be the most unusual thing to eat, along with the ivy that climbs up one of my garden walls!

Mine have all enjoyed a feast of washed cooked prawns. :D

Gosh, they are eating better than me! I haven't tried my chooks with any meat/fish yet.

Awe my chooks love mashed potato, but it's funny seeing them walking around with bits of mash all over their beaks!

Lets see, grapes, mealworms, sweetcorn, peas, pasta, rice, any veggies except carrots and brocolli  they do not like apple anymore, they loved the custard cream that I did't notice had been put in with their treat box  they sometimes have a bit of tuna mixed with their pasta.

hiya, ours tried (and liked) red cabbage recently, but it turned their poo blue! And the blue bled into the snow....

they like pasta, rice, sweetcorn, broccoli, corgettes, marrow, cucumber, cabbages, lettuce, bread soaked in milk, sprouts, peas, beans.

Didn't realise that porridge, yoghurt and mashed potato could be on the menu too...looking forward to trying those out at the weekend!

Mine love egg noodles (now possible as Sainsburys make theirs with free range egg) warmed in the microwave with tuna scattered over the top. That's up there with grapes as favourite food.

We tried them with corn on the cob and they ignored it, also ignored peppers, brocolli, and pasta spirals then a friend suggested trying noodles as they looked like worms.

I pointed out they were ex-batts and probably hadn't seen a worm before but what do you know - I guess instinct is a powerful thing.... worms are alongside dustbathing, laying eggs in nestboxes, going to bed at night, bullying....
