Took the plunge and upgraded at last - *NOW WITH PICS*

Recommended Posts

Today, after much deliberation and consideration of the cost, I ordered my (cube purple).:dance::dance:

The plan is to offset part of the cost by selling one of my 2 eglus. The other eglu and run, I will keep, for introductions and maybe to offer for rent or chook-sitting services.

With 6 (soon to be 7, hopefully) girls laying, there is usually a bit of a queue for the 2 eglu nest boxes, so I anticipate that this will improve that situation. Also I am thinking one cube will be quicker to clean than 2 eglus.

Of course this has nothing to do with the fact that the Cube can sleep at least 3 more hens than I have at present. That thought had never occured to me. :liar::whistle::liar::whistle:

The cubes are great. You won't regret it.

What new hens will you choose?

:D

Stop encouraging me Janty! :shameonu::lol:

OH doesn't know I have this planned. I'm thinking I might look into getting 3 ex-batts as I would be able to keep them in the spare eglu for a while until they are fully fit then integrate gradually.

Or I also have on my wishlist:

Ancona

Silver laced Wyandotte

Frizzle

Cube is due to arrive next Thursday, which surprised me that it was so soon.

Having had both green and purple eglus, purple is absolutely the best colour IMHO.

Sorry guys, we've been having a woodburning stove fitted for the last 2 days and I've been clearing up, so not been online.

There were some fun and games the first night. Despite having seen me assembling it and taking the eglus out of the run (half a day's work), when it came to bedtime, all that was forgotten. Treacle, Toffee and Scully did manage to get up the ladder with a bit of slipping, sliding and wing-flapping, with many accusatory glances my way.

Voiletta followed in an even more ungainly fashion, but silly Gabriela hadn't a clue so had to be "walked" up the ladder by DD and put to bed.

Funniest of all were the Silkies. They were convinced the opening should be where it usually was, which unfortunately for them was where the cube poo trays are. Muggle especially kept doing circuits in the hope that a doorway would magically appear, whilst Squib "quacked" her disgruntlement very loudly.:lol::lol:

Fortunately they all now seem to have worked it out and can get in and out unaided. Some of them have even used the nestbox, though Violetta laid on the bars again!

I promise to go and take some pics this morning and post them later. :anxious:

fabulous!!!! can I ask (I have always wondered) does the ladder not reach the ground? is it far from the ground?

no it doesn't reach the ground, I dont know why they designed it like this, butWhen be laid the hard standing area for the cube we made it a different height to the walk in run to compensate on this gap from floor to ladder and now my ladder is MUCH closer to the ground, thank goodness.

Great Photos! I agree with AHN worth the wait :D
