Help...party flowers

Recommended Posts

Just got back from my wonderful holiday in St Lucia, 4lbs heavier but what the heck! Still a wee bit jet lagged and my darling son has just called to remind me that ages ago I said I would do 12 table arrangements for his engagement party. Of course I now remember but with all the excitement of holiday planning and hen rehoming over the last few weeks have not given it a thought.

He and his gorgeous wife to be, want funky but modern, no lilies and the wow factor please! No small order then! It seems 'elf and safety' prevent the use of candles so my first ideas are defunct. Anyone got any simple, stylish ideas that fits the bill? Not too expensive either after the Lucian blow out! :?

I just know the Omleteers will come up with the goods! Party is the weeknd after next so time to practise too.

For one of my floristry exams I had to do table dec and the brief for the couple was "young, trendy but love nature/greenery"

I got a terracotta pot with a bit of floral foam. Held five or so bright orange gerbras in both hands so the stems are together and the blooms are held in a tight ball/clump with faces out. Just shoved this into the centre of the foam and then bound them with natural raffia. Covered the foam in bright green moss. Tied a raffia collor around the pot and then added gold thin wire to the raffia on the stems and small "long loops" of it to the moss.

It was SO simple but looked striking, I loved it. If I could convince OH out of bed and into the loft I would scan and loan a photo. It was also fairly cheap.

I once saw some table decs that had cellophane scrunched up in a vase with flowers in, it looked like the flowers were stood in crushed ice - really effective

Eucalyptus (the thin whippy branches) looks modern and mixed with white flowers looks fab

Glossy green leaves such as banana or fatsia look good with bright colours especially bird of paradise flowers

Zantedeschia (Arum lily) 'Green Goddess' is very striking

The jewel coloured Anenomes (sp??) look fab in bowls or shallow vases

Ikea is good for cheap vases!

Let us know how you get on!

Have you seen the goldfish bowl centre pieces. Just a couple of stems and grasses round the inside of the bowl looks really effective, sitting the bowl on a mirror looks good too. I think you may even be able to hire the fish bowls & mirrors at some florists or on the net.

Would love to see photos of your masterpieces when you've done.

Good Luck to you and Congratulations to you son ans future DiL. :D

I love all these ideas, I wish I lived near an Ikea as the vases seemd to fit the bill, but then the terracotta pots sounded good too, and the anemones idea. I also like the mirrors too, so many things to think about. Once I have decided I might make three trial ones, photograph them and do a fun poll here! A bit like a reality show where the audience chooses. :D

I like this idea, it does look very striking yet simple. You could add to the idea by putting a small string of battery operated clear twinkle lights inside each fish bowl it would look stunning with a mirror underneath and the light reflecting. :D

I like this strawberry tree, you could have various dips to dip the strwabs in; cream, chocolate ganache etc?

My firends (Very pink) wedding she had made her own flower arrangements for the tables. Beside the vase is her bouquet and the bridesmaids bouquet. Her favourite flowers are gerberas and she just died the water with food colouring, added pink twigs and sparkly dangly bits and wrapped the vase with garland. This is the more grand one on the top table, everyone else had slightly less sparklies etc. Quite funky and VERY her.

I've recently seen an effective flower arrangement at a party. On each table they had a small arrangement that actually consisted of a clear plastic drinks cup, which was wrapped round with a large leaf to conceal as much of the cup as possible, and that was tied in place with a bit of raffia. Then there was just one large yellow gerbera in each cup 8) . It looked quite fresh & modern, not at all fussy and has to be dead easy to do....providing you can get hold of enough big leaves over there at this time of year 8)
