Popcorn
Not a Christmas present - or a toy even - but Car Booster Seats are sold out everywhere as well Lesley - you're right. My Mum has been trying to get one and can't, and she works in Mothercare! We've been keeping the boxes of things that Stefan has been bought. you never know do you? Charlottechicken
Not a Christmas present - or a toy even - but Car Booster Seats are sold out everywhere as well I did manage to track down two in Banbury on Friday. Is this because of a change in the law? I seem to remember reading something about it.
Guest
Is this because of a change in the law? I seem to remember reading something about it. Yup, from next week, all children under 12, and under 135cm will need to use a booster seat. There seems to be some confusion over wether a child younger than 12 but over 135 cm will need one though. One shop told us that Duncan wouldn;t need one, as he is over the rquired height, the Health Visitor told us today that he WOULD need one. Mel (& Paul)
Anyone else think that this was a ploy of child seat manufacturers

We now cannot take our children from school swimming on the bus this week or for the forseeable future, as one parent has kicked up a fuss that the school needs to provide booster seats for them. This is going to cost the school a FORTUNE (54 seater bus). So, our payment of £200 per week to the swimming pool, our block booking, which we have to honour with the coach company (£1,500 per half term), AND the cost of providing bloomin booster seats, AND not being able to get any...... DON'T go there... I am NOT a happy Bunny! Oh, and "Ooops, word censored!"ody warned us, or has provided official guidance for schools....... how stupid and do I feel? Popcorn
Annie - do the buses/coaches have seat belts to be able to use the booster seats even if you did buy them? Hmmm...I can see both sides of the argument here. If booster seats will save lives in an accident, then it has to be worth it. I wouldn't want anything to happen to Stefan that could ultimately be avoided...but then on the other hand, in all the years and all the coaches that have been running kids to and from swimming baths and away day trips...well...it's a very, very rare thing to hear of an accident with fatalities, and would booster seats make a difference on a bus without seat belts? Guest
Annie - here is the official site - there is a section on minibuses and coaches - hope it helps. http://www.thinkroadsafety.gov.uk/campaigns/childc"Ooops, word censored!"ats/childc"Ooops, word censored!"ats.htm#
Cinnamon
I am just grateful that my girls are long lanky tall things,& above the minimum height requirement (heck, they are taller than me ) You try telling an 11 year old that she has to go back to using a booster seat
The Dogmother
There was an article in the Mail yesterday about the confusion over the new rule because the government just haven't publicised it at all. There was a call to delay the start of the new law until people can be fully informed. According to the table published yesterday, Rosie, who is 8 and a tad under the height limit will need to have a booster seat and sit in the back (well at least until she is taller). As I hardly ever have her in the car, I am loathe to spend 20 quid on something that will hardly get used in the few months that it takes her to grow the extra few inches. So I am going to make sure that she rides in the back and has a cushion to sit on.
Lesley
Well, Lauren likes using a booster seat but we're always leaving our two in the wrong car That's why I decided to buy two nice new ones which were grey and matched the interior of my car ( ) I measured Lauren yesterday - she's 3cm over the height for supposed 11/12 year olds - she's 8 I know she's always been tall for her age but where do the Government get their data from??? Mrs Frugal
We've not measured Ollie yet. He's 13 but incredibly dinky. He'll be gutted if he has to go into a child seat at this age! LSH says that as he's 13 the rules shouldn't apply with a bit of luck anyway.
Guest
My 11 year old would love to sit on a booster! Even though she's now at secondary school! But she can't!! My 8 year old does sit on a booster and I'm going to keep him on it because he complains the seat belt cuts into his neck without it. It took a while to convince him to get back onto the booster about 6 months ago, but now he's caught onto all the legislation he won't go anywhere without it! He is taller than the height requirement but I'm keeping that quiet! Neither of them can travel in the front of our cars because of the air bags. They're just not tall enough and it doesn't bother them anymore!
AnnieP
Its a minefield eh? All coaches used by schools have to have seatbelts by law: (Have done for some time), but they're across the lap belts, and I was under the impression that the booster seat thing was to stop the cross section of the belt from being too high? So, still none the wiser as to if schools/coach company's will have to provide them for all those under 135 cm. Meanwhile, none of our children are learning to swim Lets hope none of them fall in the river over the next few weeks!
Guest
If you look at the official website (link further up somewhere) it states that buses and coaches don't have to be fitted with boosters - it's only if the operator supplies them that they must be used. ali-s
I find these new rules very confusing (or maybe i'm just tired). Looking at the site Shona posted, Natalie who has just turned 11 and measures 152cms will not have to use a booster seat
Paola
My children are 1, 3.5 and 7.5. My 1 year old is in a car seat, my 3.5 year old is on a booster with a back on it, which leaves my 7.5 year old. My car cannot take three seats across the back I must admit that seeing children not belted up in a car drives me mad
clare*
Ben thankfully is too tall to have one. Thank goodness. I think I may have had a battle. Not very cool to be 9 and in a car seat

My car cannot take three seats across the back I didn't think I would be able to fit 3 in the back of mine, but I managed to get quite a small one from Tesco the other week, so they all fit perfectly in the bag. I didn't relish the thought of telling chookiehubbie that he was going to have to sit in the back seat, while one of the children took his place next to me!
