AJuff
DD would like a rocking horse for her birthday in May!!! Is it an expensive toy that just sits around or do they get used? Any one out there with one?
Snowy
Oo er .... How old is she? And does she love horses? I bought a little one from Dunelm a couple of years ago for the boys, it was only £50 and they loved it. I wouldn't have wanted to spend more though as it was only ever a temporary diversion from trains for them and it's now in the loft. On the other hand, I had one of those cheap horses on springs when I was a kid and rode it for miles and miles. What I would have given for a proper one with long flowing locks and removable saddle and bridle .... In fact I think I'd still like one
Egluntyne
My Dad made one for my children and it certainly got played with.
Shirl
We bought a large (up to teenager) one for E when she was 2. Both her and her sister enjoy playing on it. It is in our lounge which only gets used a few times a year so she doen't play on it much but if the door is left open and she spots it she dives in for a ride. To be honest I think most toys that are left permanently on view become ornaments and out of sight they are novelties. Because hers is wood it will last for years and she she will be able to pass it on to her children.
Phonix
OMG when we were little my cousin had one and I was sooooo jealous! Every time we went to their house myself, my cousin, her brother and mine would fight over who got to play on it and it would keep us all entertained for however long we were there: minutes, hours and it had even been known to keep us all distracted for the whole weekend! Soooo many games revolved around that rocking hourse!!! xXx
MadMitch
I love rocking horses, I rode mine for hours and hours and flat out to Joanne Strauss' the hunt. Unfortunately we got burgled and that was all they took. I always wanted to get another one to sit on my landing but have never been able to afford it just for that purpose. It will always be top of my list when I have some spare dosh though as the really good ones are so beautiful but you would need to pay about £2k + for those. My neighbour makes them as well so it is very hard for me not to be tempted, he also does sheep, rabbits, cats, pigs. http://www.rockinglambs.co.uk/index.htm
Paola
DD would like a rocking horse for her birthday in May!!! Is it an expensive toy that just sits around or do they get used? ubereglu
I love rocking horses! I've never owned one, but we used to play on the one they used to have in the local Ottakers-eventually they ran out of room to put it anywhere though-I'd love to know what happened to it though. craftyhunnypie
Even if it only gets played with for a short while, they make a beautiful ornament & reminder of childhood. I love the traditional ones. Emma.x
chelsea
I bought a rocking horse from this company below for a friend's childs 1st birthday http://www.pedalpusherslimited.co.uk/pedalscat/rocking-horses-c-4_12.html their customer service was good, the one I ordered was the mammas and pappas "Donkey" rocking horse, he was gorgeous but I would probably only say he was suitable for young'uns. I love the traditional looking ones aswell - the dapple grey horses with shiny paintwork but I suspect they would cost a bomb!
Shirl
The painted horses are often a bit cheaper than natural wood but we figured they look a bit rough when the paint starts to get chipped and I didn't want to be moaning at the girls to mind the paintwork. Yes we paid more than £2k for ours but it is a work of art, they have real horse hair, leather saddle, bridle etc, glass eyes, brass fittings. It isn't on the traditional rocker base but the safer swing base. I think ours is beautiful and would like it to have a name but DD refuses to keep the same name. It gets renamed everytime she uses it
MadMitch
This is like my one that was stolen.... She was lovely
AJuff
Wow! All positive replies. DD will be 6 in MAy so It would need to be rather large!! She like the Mamas and Papas Brandy horse.
Valkyrie
We bought one for DS, but DD ended up using it much more (and me when "Ooops, word censored!"ody was looking - and I was thinner then too). Ours looks like MadMitch's only dapple grey. Sadly the tail has come off and now looks a bit like a manx horse. It now resides in the shed at the bottom of the garden underneath an old curtain - along with my Silver Cross toy pram with big wheels that served very well as a wagon train for my teddies. ubereglu
Well, have been looking on ebay, and there's this lovely one: Item no: 270353962675 It's in London, but starting bid is only £1, so really the main thing you'd have to pay for is the courier. This one's also lovely: Item no: 120385797531 Situated in Wilmslow, pick up only though.
Chili
Ooh ooh - we have this one ( the top picture in ubereglu's post ) only our horse is a different colour, but the rest is exactly the same. We paid £450 for it off Ebay about 2 years ago for my daughter at Christmas. She adores it and plays with it all the time. Now she has a real pony she uses it at home to practice her vaulting It will last forever ( well maybe not quite forever ) but it will be lovely to hand down. fluffyknickers
Oooh its my dream to own one like those in the pictures. My friend used to have one that was made for her and I used to love going round there to go on it. Chose to buy cube and chickens instead! alih
Your daughter will love it and so will her friends: we had one as kids and all the kids in the road used to come for turns - and my parents kept it and my daughters both were obsessed with it as littlies. Now my nieces use it and it's over 120 years old! What a lucky girl!
