because the girls often want to lay at the same time I've made a nesting box divider to split it into 2...

 

 

 

 

 

they seem much happier now, the Lemon Brahma has decided to lay just in the right side whilst the others, except the Sussex, alternate

Wow that's great - you are obviously very handy.

 

I didnt realise they may not like laying together as often my three go in at two at a time and even three at a time all laying in the same spot - perhaps they just have a one in one out rota while the other waits on the bars.

That looks very snazzy . I particularly like the slightly lower middle partition in case they want to have a gossip over the "wall" .

It's a shame that Omlet can't make something similar

 

my girls won't lay together in the cube nestbox.......if the nestbox is being used, they just stand on the ladder making a racket until it's their turn

I opened the egg port on the yesterday, only to find the nestbox FULL of grey feathers. On closer inspection I realised 2 of the Orpies were facing into the inner left and right corners and Bluebell was perched between/on top of the pair of them, facing the egg port door By the time I got back with the camera Bluebell had got out!

OMLET please take note of this idea - it should be the next mod for Cube owners. I suggested something two years ago but received no reply . As you say no one told the hens it was a double nesting box

I've sent a link to this thread to James and Hanns at Omlet, together with a plea for something like to be made and made as a retro fit aswell........only time will tell.....but I'll keep everything crossed

I agree! my lot will only lay one at a time and like to lay in private - otherwise there is a right old performance!

Brilliant idea. Most of mine don't mind bunking up together but one of the Fenton blues makes the most appalling row if she can't have vacant possession.

 

Why not forward the idea to Omlet? Copyright it though.

here's what you'll need...

 

1 hand saw

1 jig saw with blade

1 screwdriver

approx 8 x 1" screws

3 x 1.5" screws

1 sheet of 4' x 2' x 1/2" plywood

 

use the original port divider as a template

 

simple as that, 30 minutes work

What a fab idea mine are usually OK with bunking up, but Betty growls at anyone who tries to get in to the nest box when she is in there
