We have had a few softies over the last couple of weeks or so, 2 in 24hrs fromm Aretha, therefore I am going to start giving a calcium supplement to help a bit.

What is the prefered choice of eveyone here?

My chickens have grit, garlic and layers pellets and free range all day.

Thanks very much

It's early days so I can't make a decision yet - I was giving the girls limestone flour (after a few weeks of regular softies) but decided to get some Zolcal D to see if that worked. They've been having it for about 4 days and we are certainly getting more hard eggs but we're also getting a softie every other day or so too :? . So I'll get back to you if it improves!

I've put other because I used limestone flour and cod liver oil in the afternoon snack for a few weeks when one was laying the odd softie but she still laid the odd softie.

Started wittling about it so they all had zolcal D in water for a few days and was ok then laid a softie so gave it to her individually for the last week in the afternoon and she laid 3 ok, 2 softies and then 1 ok today. :?

I'm going to give her a few more days and if they are ok will give them all limestone flour and cod liver oil in their pellets a la Egluntine.

I think it must be another cause for her, she's not going to get osteoporotic. but I am worried about overdosing her :?:(

Hello. I use Limestone flour. I started when one of mine was limping badly. We had also had one softie but several eggs had shells that were very delicate. Within days it had done the trick. Eggshells all much harder and no more limping chicken. Even my father commented that perhaps he should try it!!

I give a very small amount most mornings as I give mine porridge made with water and a sprinkle of limestone flour and sometimes chicken spice. Mine free range all day, but I think the grit situation was made worse by the poor weather washing everything away off the surface.

I am wondering whether I should stop giving it now for a while.
