ValerieR
Can anyone tell me why chickens dustbathe?? Do they do it in particular weather or at certain times of year?? And do they REALLY sunbathe??? Good to be forewarned about these things otherwise I might think a sunbathing chicken was paralysed with fright or had had a stroke or something ... They dustbathe in the wild to get rid of lice and mites. They do it all year round, it just turns into mud bathing in the winter if you're not careful . They really do sunbathe. They love it. Eyes closed, wings and legs stretched out, especially if you are nearby, they trust you to be on the watch for predators for them, so that they can snooze. It is truly peaceful to watch . It's not peaceful the first time you see it though because you think your chook is dead! Even now I look twice just to be sure
Valkyrie
First time I saw a bird do this was a blackbird - I thought poor little mite, so went to "help" him. Turned out he was sunbathing - since then I've seen them do it loads of times. One particular blackbird was in Harrogate, I was watching while Sudokuing in the car because the rest of the family were visiting James Herriot's house. People kept walking past him and he mostly ignored them but if they got too close he ran off, only to go back to the same spot and flop down again when they had gone. I haven't seen my girls do that yet - they seem to prefer the shade of their clubhouse (weeping cotoneaster tree).

I was forwarned about chickens that appear to melt in the sushine, but it suprised me just how far they stretch out the first time I saw them. Truly, they are ladies of leisure .
