puddleduck
Did she purr ? no, but if she could of laid on her back with her legs in the air I think she would of done! the others just kept walking past looking at her... almost in disgust before getting a face full of soil themselves... she even threw some my way too! was a joy to watch! chelsea
Great pics. I love it when they dustbathe and the others surround "the bath" and peck at the soil.

snowcloud
Ours love a dust bath too, but have to make their own... I shall have to try the trug method for them!
seraphine
Excellent! Do they manage to get in the trug themselves? Or do you have to lift them in there? Something else for my ever-growing shopping list
tidygirlsuk
I think this thread is a good idea to let new people know that they do this. I was quite alarmed when i saw this for the first now i love it.

Margaret
Love the pictures, have solved another dilemma for me, so many thanks. Tallulah and Lavender arrive on 9th May and spent all day yesterday looking at covered cat trays but now will buy a pink trug, do I use play sand or compost? also do they jump in or do they need help? sorry for stuiped questions but very worried that I do something wrong. Valkyrie
I think birds are attracted to pink - our baby sparrow that we nurtured kept pulling out the pink tissues from a mixed box and tried to bath in it - hilarious to watch. But nothing prepares you for a sunbathing dustbathing chicken that resembles road kill. Spent too long watching Cheyenne yesterday - makes mental note to top up the dirt which is now mostly outside the old sandpit.
atsw
We've put an old green recycling box in our WIR, which we top up with dry soil. I don't have any pics of them in it, but try to imagine two Buff Orps and a large Red Hen all trying to get into one green recycling box, it is very funny watching them shuffle for position. When they are allowed into the garden, they tend to head for an old kids swing, where they have created their own multi-hen dust bath, complete with shade! puddleduck
Excellent! Do they manage to get in the trug themselves? Or do you have to lift them in there? Something else for my ever-growing shopping list they manage the trug just fine on there own, or at least daisy does, the others are yet to bother with it! I used soil and a little wood ash, play sand is good too (I might add some to mine!) Wait till you see them sunbathing (I thought one of mine had died the first time I saw them ). Sorry I've hijacked the thread a bit but Tidygirl makes a good point! Don't worry, your not hijacking it, I just love to see other pics and hear other ideas! Ain't Nobody Here
Why are my girls absolutely terrified of tyres when everybody elses seem to know exactly what to do with them ?
Valkyrie
I hadn't scrolled down far enough to see the last posting, but when I saw that tyre full of chickens I thought "oh dear, don't let ANH see that one" too late! And look at the queue forming around it!
Kalu
ANH - maybe your girls had a bad experience with tyres on wheels in their previous life?
