stoice
I've got various pick-me-ups and remedies for my chooks (Purple spray, savlon liquid, tea tree oil, spice etc) but my OH just text me to say our dog has cut her leg on barbed wire today. Nothing bad, she's not bothered by it (But will probably be licking it and making it worse tonight!) and i will wash it in savlon solution to clean it. But it got me wondering. What items are a good idea to have in her doggy medicine cabinet? You know, for cuts, s"Ooops, word censored!"es, sickness, fleas, ticks etc. just the small stuff that doesn't need vet attention. Thanks
The Dogmother
I'd pack it with some vet wound powder - Savlon and Dettol are both harmful to some animals.
stoice
Oh. Didn't know that. Ok thanks.
The Dogmother
That's OK, we live and learn. Best to stick to animal preps for them and make sure that it's OK to use on that particular species as (for example) some things that are OK for cats are in fact toxic for dogs etc
Gem_Seb
I always stick to good old salt water! my cat was always hurting and cutting himself on various things and getting in flights so coming home with bites and scratches, i just kept bathing it in salt water morning and night until it started to clear up and apart from once or twice avoided trips to vets! You have to be so careful about using anything on cats and dogs, a good forum is vetclick, i signed up to this when my cat was ill, you can post questions to an online vet and he will post his answers back to you free of charge if you want to double check or just give your local vets a quick call, there is usually a nurse or the receptionist can answer a quick question, luckily for me my best mate is a vetinary nurse!! http://www.vetclick.com/forum/login.php
Redwing
I have wound powder, purple spray, bandages, flea spray and shampoo and a tick remover That seems to cover most things
Lewis
Nail clippers are useful if one gets caught, or if they are sharp. Vetwrap is good for bandages aswell as it sticks to its self, and you can get a no bite one which tastes nasty so the dog doesn't eat it! The Dogmother
I have an animal first aid kit that I've put together and it covers all of them, all in one box.
