Minnie the Moocher
Does P&P really work? Is it preventative or does it soften deep set wrinkles and furrows?
redhotchick
Does P&P really work? Is it preventative or does it soften deep set wrinkles and furrows? Apparently it is independently proven to "restore the skin's structure" and "after 4 weeks the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles is reduced by up to 50%" That sounds good to me! Egluntyne
I'd need a lot. I'm sure you wouldn't. If it worked for me it will work for anyone. Why not give it a try whilst the special offers are on?
Minnie the Moocher
I'm going to get some at the weekend, thanks. I'll do HALF my face with Perfect and Protect, and the OTHER HALF with My Old Cream. I think we'll need some sort of control to prove the effects are genuine. If it works, and you live in my area and spot a half-wrinkly-half-smooth freaky lady, probably with a bit of chicken poop on her jeans, or maybe some wood shavings in her hair... 'TIS ME!!! ..lay a little egg for me
The scientific study showing that the Boots product improved wrinkles has some flaws in the design and conclusions. Checkout this article from the NHS summarizing the study and discussing how it should be interpreted. The most important bit to read is the last section of the article, which explains the problems with the study: * The characteristics of the treated and control groups before the study began are not described. Even in randomised trials, there can be important differences between groups that can sometimes partly explain the results. [i.e., were the control group more wrinkly before the study started anyway?] * The results and significance between the cream and control groups at six months are not fully reported. If these had been provided, it would be possible to judge how close to a significant result the six-month trend came. [i.e., the paper does not give enough details in its report for other scientists to check that the authors conclusions are valid] * The assumptions underlying the extrapolation of the control group results to 12-months are not reported. [i.e., since the participants were told which cream they had been using at the 6-month point and then were allowed to choose what cream to continue with, it is likely that the 12-month results are biased by this but since the paper does not explain how the authors extrapolated the data, we don't know if the 12-month results are valid] * The dropout rates are not reported, nor is any measure of compliance with the cream between the groups. [i.e., if we don't know how many dropped out or did not use the cream as instructed (most likely because the cream was not working) we can't work out what the true difference between the two creams actually was] * The study was small, therefore limiting its ability to detect a true difference in outcomes. [i.e., the more people you have taking part in a study the more reliable the findings are, this study used a surprisingly small number of participants considering how eager most people are to test out any anti-aging product!] * Any minor adverse effects, such as skin redness or irritation, common with the more potent topical retinoids, are not reported. [i.e., on top of everything else we don't know if there were any problems with either cream, which is important because the active ingredients are known to cause skin irritation] As all participants knew that they were receiving the test cream in the ‘open’ part of this trial from six months to 12 months, this has effectively compromised the benefits of blinding. Although there are understandable reasons why this was done, it remains to be seen what benefits there may be if a larger trial was conducted for the full 12 months. The text in square brackets is my explanation of what the NHS's conclusions mean for those who might find the scientific language a bit hard to fathom. So, although buying the Boots cream might help your wrinkles, it is not guaranteed, so don't be disappointed if it doesn't seem to help you. Of course, the moisturising effect will help anyway and the Boots stuff is a lot cheaper than many other anti-wrinkle creams so one might as well give it a go... The Dogmother
Great quote from Jan Moir in The Mail today: In times of crisis, people have got to learn to stop panic-buying. Idiots! It is so silly and self-defeating. If we just all grow up and calm down, there will be enough No7 Protect & Perfect Intense Beauty Serum to go round. Now take a deep breath and get to the back of the queue. This batch is mine, all mine.
Minnie the Moocher
That quote made me laugh Claret. I have been talking to a friend this afternoon whose husband is stockpiling dry foods in case of a swine 'flu outbreak. He has bought another freezer to stock up too. I think he might have been in the scouts! Mind you, if he's right we're all going to look silly with all our available cupboard space taken up with anti-wrinkle serum whilst he feasts on tinned peaches!!!
