Poo help please!

[Space Chick]

I am considering the merits of a Walk in Run, I'm only fighting the inevitable!

What I want to know is:

1. how large yours is

2. how many girls are in it

I have seen ones that are 6 foot by 9, 12 or 15 foot where the cube can sit on the outside. (From chicken-house.co.uk - don't know if anyone has dealt with them?)

I have square foot calculators and meter calculators standing by. Have read the girls ideally need 8 square feet each which is 0.75 square metres (although I know 1 square meter per girl has been mentioned on here).

So if I had a 6 foot by 12 foot, thats 72 square metres so a maximum of 9 girls by my maths! I have 3 now, so potentially would introduce 3 or 4 more, taking me to 6 or 7. So they should have plenty of room.

Thanks (and don't tell my OH )

Mine is small but perfectly formed . 2.5m x 2m if you want exact measurements .

[Space Chick]

Ah 6.5 foot by 8 foot. Thanks ANH. Thats 52 square foot.

[Egluntyne]

Mine is 9 x 18 with 14 girls in it at the mo.

[quickcluck]

Mine is 21x9 with 8 soon to be 12

[Redwing]

Mine is 3mx2m with four girls and their Eglu which is on a table

[Abbey Road Girl]

Don't forget that you can put in a mezzanine level! (Sounds like a shopping mall!)

[Space Chick]

I thought about tables and perches. Make it interesting.

[moochoo]

Mine is 14ft x 7ft and has 10 in. The also have a mezzanine level to increase the "floor space"

[Ain't Nobody Here]

My girls seem to spend half their time either on their bench or perched on the branches. Definitely a good idea to put high level stuff in .

[wiblick]

Mine is 20ft X 6ft with 2 eglus on raised tables. I have yet to fit any other furniture but will.

I will be housing 6 for the moment, increasing to 8 next year.

They will free range 3 times a week for at least 2 hours at a time.

I went with 15 sq ft per bird as my calculation owing to their relative lack of free-ranging time. 3 of the girls are large breeds - or will be, the composition of my flock to be changes daily!

[Seagazer]

Mine is 12 x 7 feet and I have 3 girls in it. But they don't freerange.

Mines approx (hubby didn't really measure anything ) 12' x 7' with a 3' x 3' extension. we have 5 girls and that seems right maybe 1/2 more. They won't freerange in the winter but at the moment they do every other day in a 10' x 20' area.

[atsw]

Mines 15ft x 6ft x 6ft. Three chooks, housed in a that resides inside the WIR.

Looking to increase the flock to 4 or 5 at some future point in time (quite fancy a to add more sleeping / nesting acomodation ).

4m x 2m and three girls and my eglu up on a table. I don't know what that is in feet though.

[theherd123]

The hen hotel is approx 5m x 5m & contains and eglu with run & a cube + shed loads of ground space for the girls too

[meezers]

My first walk in run with the 6 chooks is 10 ft x 5 ft, plus perches and chair don't forget you can also add the floor space in the house if it's raised off the ground.

My new run for the new girls is an odd shape, but works out at 90 sq ft for the 7 chooks (well, 61/2- the silkie doesn't count as a whole chook ! ) they also have perches, a chair and a couple of tables to increase the area.

[Janty]

Mine isn't built yet...it will be soon.

It will be 6.51mtrs x 4.65mtrs when it's finally built. That will house 23 in total but 7 are bantams.

[Space Chick]

I noticed you were getting one on the we're all building walk in runs, lets compare notes thread Janty. Yours is HUGE!

The big week is next week isn't it?

Hope it goes well for you.

Following the visit from my handyman, I think I can go up to 15ft by 6 ft, so thats 90 square feet or 8.4 square metres, so 8 girls easy!

[BarbaraJ]

4m x 2m and three girls and my eglu up on a table. I don't know what that is in feet though.

approx 12' x 6'

Ours will be 6ftx6ft with 4 girls. A bit of a squish on the face of it but we're limited by the size of the garden. We're going to put levels in and the girls will get some time outside.

And as ex-batts, I'm hoping they'll feel like they are in a palace after where they've come from.
