Well we've been very lucky. A neighbour heard we were going to put our house on the market and has offered us the asking price. Even better they are cash buyers. We are now madly scanning the market for suitable properties. We're moving to be nearer DDs school as we are moving her to a new one in September. At the moment we are a 40 minute drive away and would ideally be max 15 minute drive.

Please tell me what you would do.

House 1 is 4 double bedrooms upstairs and 2 downstairs on a 3 acre plot. In a relatively remote area 20 minutes drive down lanes etc from DDs new school. OH would need to buy a car to get to the station.

House 2 is 6 bedrooms has an indoor pool. 1 acre and just under 15 minutes drive from the new school but 2 doors from a college (not ideal) and 10 minute walk to town OH can cycle to the station.

House 3 is 4 bedrooms but 2 are small it has a small annex of sorts above the garage which DS2 would love. 3/4 acre. A bit in the country but only 2 miles from town. 15 minutes from the school. Would need to do the extention to make it big enough. OH would need a car.

House 4 is 5 bedrooms needs a lot of work as been empty for a year and has damp issues. It's also timber framed so that may have been impacted by the damp. Ivy is now groing into the conservatory. Only 1/3rd acre. 15 minutes from the school and 3 minute cycle to the station.

I would choose house number 3. Not because of its glorious colour btw! I think it has a lot of character, and it looks like you have lots of space into which you can expand. I also liked the 6 bed (house 2 I think) as it has an amazing sized garden and also looks really nice.

I don't envy you trying to choose.

edit - it was house 1 that I liked second, not 2. Got all confused

I would probably choose No 1 because I couldn't resist 3 acres :) I would not choose the house with the indoor swimming pool, these things cost a fortune to maintain. I think No. 4 has the most character. To be honest, I only like really old houses so probably wouldn't choose any of them......sorry

I chose no three because it has stables and I forgot that I wasnt choosing a house for myself

I love the idea of an annex above the barn :D

You have to ask yourself if you can afford and are willing to maintain three acres and if you would use them, if the answer is yes then fair enough but number three looks like a tidy house on a decent plot so would be my choice :D

They are all gorgeous - I think you have to go for the one that feels like it could be 'home' when you walk in! I've voted for no 1 - looks like it needs minimum attention, and all that land!! (although no 4 is also gorgeous, despite needing the work :? ) On second thoughts, don't ask me!

No 3 does have stables but not enough land to keep even a pony. We can afford to buy and maintain all of the houses, we don't want to stretch ourselves because DDs attend private schools so need to be able to afford the fees. I'm sure we could get someone in to mow the grass if the OH got bored of doing it or DS might be willing.

My heart says No1 but it is quite remote and not a great drive to the school which is the whole reason for moving.

Without looking......I'd have to go for the one with the pool!! :D

I just have a space on the lawn where I will have a pool ..........when we win the Lottery

The children and the OH all think the pool but I'm not a swimmer so it doesn't appeal to me. I don't think it's a very attractive house either but I didn't hate it. I think new windoes woild make a big improvement.

House number 3.......................I would fill those barns with waifs and strays

Just think you could get one of those mules, or two, or three!

Good luck

I think that's what the OH is worried about!

We can afford to buy and maintain all of the houses

Do you mean all of them? - or any of them? - have you had a Lottery win you'd like to share with us? I could have my pool then! :D

No you're absolutely right I did mean any of them  . If we could afford all of them I wouldn't have the problem of choosing but as neither of us buy lottery tickets that isn't going to happen.

Number 1 definitely.

You cant go wrong with a house with your own land, you can extend (subject to planning of course), do you own annex and eventually have your own pool if you want.

I would much rather being in the middle of nowhere, with privacy and be surrounded by land then be hemmed in with neighbours in a town.

Am very
