Plum
Had a look in Focus today. Their slabs are 400x400 £1.69 and I can pick them up easily.
Janty
I have to say that I would go for concrete. I know that it's an expense but the run sits well on the top and it raises the run off the floor and away from water, preventing rotting. Is your quote for a completely concreted floor or a perimeter concreted area? We went for a perimeter concrete. Here is the run on top of it. Plum
Thanks Janty, just love seeing pictures of your set up. I need to get the whole thing dry so need the area paved or concrete or combination Agree it needs to be level whatever or the run won't last long. Poached Egg
Hi All Eglu and three ladies were collected on 20 Jan 'for the kids' and OH and I have been discussing cube and WIR options since the following w/e. Short term we are looking at getting/building a WIR to go with the eglu and longer term OH wants to change to a cube - the idea being that either will be outside the WIR. I have spent huge amounts of time pouring over all of PART 2 and most of PART 1 of this thread and have loads of ideas - doubtless more detailed plans will be put on here for your constructive criticism in the near future - but I have been wondering if there is a reason why hardly any runs seem to be made from tanalised wood. Cost? Mites? Any ideas? Thanks to one and all. Denise
emchook
The process of tanalising previously used "Ooops, word censored!"nic and chrome but no longer. Apparently these days it's copper based which is much safer. Maybe that is why its not used much ??
Ain't Nobody Here
Welcome to the world of walk in runs, Denise . Nice to hear that your OH is totally on board from the start . Most of us have to work on them to get what we want .
Lewis
Welcome to the forum I'd think its cost more than anything tbh. My uncle works in B&Q and they sell some wood thats treated (not sure what type) with rat poison so if they try and chew through it .... well they can't He has it on the floor of and around his shed. You can't cut it though, and they're not allowed to cut it in store
Poached Egg
Thanks for the info & welcomes! I must say I am amazed how positive OH is. Normally I have to spend ages making him think things are his idea We discussed chooks a couple of years ago and he was quite anti (although this is denied now - selective memory ) then he started asking questions just before Christmas. Having queried us getting three, rather than two chooks he now wants the option of attaching a cube to the WIR at a later date so we can get lots more girlies and is very keen to get a couple more when the WIR is done Can't say I'm against any of this, just think we will be limited to how big a WIR we can have so I have taken the rest of the day off to do some proper measuring and planning. On the plus plus side dad has recently bought an old wreck of a place with all sorts of (useful) junk piled in the garden, including a bountiful supply of paving slabs - we'll be going for a slab base then Before any demands come through we faithfully promise to post pics! fantasticjudyann
I can't believe it . I've just ordered a WIR from Tony!!!!!!! I'm sooo eggcited. I've only had my three gingernuts (Florence Maureen and Josephine) for just over 3 months but I wanted them to have a lot more space. We don't free range them as much as we'd like except when we are in the garden, because of foxes. I want to use the run from the Eglu Go as an isolation pen. Any ideas as to how to do this would be very welcome. I can't wait until the new run arrives. I wish I knew how to use smilies Judy
Cooks
to use the smileys just click on them when you type a message, they are all listed on the left hand side An isolation pen for the go run would be a great idea, but I have never seen the go in person so I will leave that for someone else to answer Congratulatiosn on your TONY run

I have used the eglu run as an isolation/intro run within my WIR and I simply cable tied a piece of weld mesh to the end that the eglu normally attaches too

You can buy extra door panels for the Go runs, but I'm not sure if they'd fit the Go end - Omlet would tell you if you phoned If not, as Emma said get some weld mesh, or just butt it up against the WIR panels, and put a cat box in so they have a bit of shelter
Lewis
Father has finally realised I won't stop nagging until its done ... so we've just been and got the cement and ballast/sand for the WIR base Because of his back he can't carry any of it or mix it, so he's been looking at hiring a cement mixer He's also been 'undecided' about where I want to put it - the one now is hidden behind the greenhouse so we can't see it and I want it the other side so we can. He asked mother if she minded being able to see it today (she never has) and so agreed I think this jet-lag thing is good, if it gets things done it can stay He's got half term off so we'll make a start and hopefully get it finished by then
Ain't Nobody Here
I used part of the eglu run to split my WIR. It needed an eglu on a table to work though! http://www.flickr.com/photos/17108187@N05/3845707344/sizes/m/
fantasticjudyann
Thanks for that. I guess butting it up to the mesh on the new run would work as its like attaching it to the Go and I have a cat basket too so Job Done Still can't use smilies - when I click on one it comes up with a code!!! More info needed please.

Poached Egg
That is good news Judy & Lewis! Third plus of the w/e - OH and dad brought the paving slabs round yesterday Judy - what is Tony's lead time at the mo? We are probably just going to get some panels from him but it would be interesting to know. Plum - my five year old wants us to get a chicken like in your photo. What breed is it D
fantasticjudyann
Hi Poached Egg and all I have just paid the deposit and Tony says it will be three weeks. Hope that fits in with your plans! BTW my run will be 4.5 x 2.5x 2.0 so they will have plenty of room to play and stretch their wings Hey I just used a smiley -thanks for that - sorry to be so simple minded! fantasticjudyann
Have just been having second thoughts about my new WIR It is going on an earth base with a built in mesh floor. I didn't go for a solid base i.e. slabs because the ground slopes and OH didn't want a large slab of concrete on the lawn. But I wanted to change from woodchips on the floor because I seem to have to change them a lot with the Eglu set up and I wanted to change to Hemcore or such like. I have just spoken to someone who says the Hemcore is better on a slabbed run but I wondered what other people have done I hope I haven't just made a big mistake or perhaps I should persevere with the wood chip( I get it dirt cheap ) but make it a much thicker layer to last longer?
