We're all planning walk in runs! PART 2!

Recommended Posts

I have to get some cuprinol on the wood which should make it blend in a bit better but I am pleased with it. I am afraid that my imagination is not as good as a lot of the people on here so I am going to have another look through the threads for some inspiration on what to put inside for them.

Im planning my wir and hope to build it myself to be honest im just getting all my ideas from aviaries4u, i have a couple of questions though regarding the construction methods used,

1. is the mesh fixed to the inside or outside of the panels ?

2. what is the best way to avoid any sharp /raggy edges when fitted to the panels,

3. is the 15cm substrate boadr at the bottom a complete panel or just 3 strips of 50 x 38 mm timber ?

4. i assume the panels are all bolted together ?

its going to be 4.5m x 1.8m x >1.9m made up of 12 panels 900mm x 1900mm

the plan is to sit it on a base of pavers around the edge. should be able to increase to 7 or maybee 8 birds.

just gave Arnold Lavers a ring,

180m £93.15 + delivery (£10+vat) total £104.65 in 3.6m lengths which should be ideal, also said if i order over 200m delivery is free :D

asked if i wanted sawn ? i said yes, is that right? the timber on a4u's runs looks smooth ?

anyway i thought thats a good price so i will wait and see what price my pal gives me.

you want pre treated sawn timber, keep an eye out theough as some of mine has warped badly, its a right pain to use so ive tried using the warped ones where they wont be as hard to work with, got my wood 4x2 in 4.8m lengths, anxious drive back with them on the roof rack though, also brought some 6x1 gravel boards to go around the bottom. Think the 4x2 wood was £7.88 a length and brought 4 lengths.

LATEST UPDATE

I have now spent just short of £240 already

i have the timber (245m), wire mesh (30m) , hinges (7), 75mm decking screws (500) , 20mm galv staples (1.5 kg), exterior screws for hinges (50), cross pein hammer for staples, translucent roof screws (100)

i still need to get the translucent roofing, bolts & door latch, quail house, and to sort the base out  dont know what to do about that yet, not sure i could do it myself and make a decent job of it (ie, get it level !) and still can't decide wether to have the full base paved or just the perimiter ?i will deffo need some more wire mesh as well,

OH AND A (cube red) NEARLY FORGOT ABOUT THAT !

anyway i need to borrow a bench saw and i can get on with making up the panels, weather permitting, just my luck now i'm ready it will rain every weekend

Progress shots and final result of my WIR.

Im very impressed with this considering me & my OH have never ket any chickens before and didnt really make any plans to build by.

All in all i think it cost us about £200 to build the coop and the WIR.

Hope you like...

have a look on your local freecycle you may find someone who is wanting to get rid of some slabs.

My in laws were having their garden done and they had some ex council slabs going so we used them for our base with some railway sleepers round the edge (wickes were good price).

I'm thinking of a second run.

It would be at the side of our house...those of you who have been will know it's an odd shape. It would be 12 feet long x six feet at one end and three feet at the other. I have had a quote off Tony...just need to work on hubby who has not been adverse to the idea in the past but the subject hasn't come up recently.

This may be a long term project but wish me luck anyway.

I'm thinking that a smaller run would house the ducks and their red eglu.

I will only be able to keep two out of the three ducks as there are two boys and a girl so space wise, they should be fine with free ranging time each day.

If it did turn out that we couldn't keep the duckyquacks (always said that if I didn't think I could give them a good life then I wouldn't push it) then the run would be a perfect bantum run.

Janty :shock::shock: Another Walk in Run :shock::shock:

Blimey, the way you are going Omlet Village is going to become Omlet City

Can't change the name...the sign is up!

Omletvillagesign005.jpg

The manufacturers had enough problems and checked the spelling several times with me.

It might tip them over the edge if I ordered another one.

In Janty`s defence the side of her house is just dead space! IMO the only thing that is suitable is a WIR!!!!:D:wink:

Oooh and you have sexed the ducyquacks......will there be name changes?

I couldn't have put that better myself...I will use that argument when I state my case to hubby.

:D

On the subject of duckyquacks' names...I don't know.

Crispy rather suits his name.
