feemcg
I moved the girls into their new big run this morning. Beauty objected loudly, or maybe she was just as excited as me then went off and laid so that was reassuring. Belle has just laid, later than usual but she was probably just getting her bearings and wondering why she had to jump up onto a platform to get in the eglu! Its great to see them with all that space although need to put some logs and perches in to make it a bit more interesting. And....at 5 o'clock I'm going to pick up 2 new chickens (Anna would like a white one and wants to call it Skye). I've got the same butterflies I had 8 weeks ago today when the eglu arrived and I went to pick up the girls at night.....now I have to worry about the introductions....joy! feemcg
Thanks folks, the new girls are in the eglu and I probably won't sleep a wink. I picked up the girls in the pouring rain and they were wet and bedraggled looking. When I got the first 3 they were in a huge dry barn but these 2 were freeranging in the rain and the white one is all muddy - the chap said she'll clean up fine! (does that mean I have to clean her up or she'll do it herself!?) Brought them back and for a wee while had them in the eglu run inside the big run then let them in with the others - loads of pecking and squawking but I stood back, then OH grabbed them one by one and put them in the eglu. Silence! Not sure whether I'll separate them in the morning or just let them get on with it! (with supervision). Will post photos as soon as Skye resembles the white chicken shes supposed to be! Oh, and the ginger one is called Iona.
feemcg
Chelsea, thats a bit spooky - first the Abington connection, now a Skye one! Hope you had a great holiday - did your chooks miss you?
Guest
the white one is all muddy - the chap said she'll clean up fine! (does that mean I have to clean her up or she'll do it herself!?) She'll clean up, somewhere around July! I used to have 3 white chickens and they used to specialise in having dustbaths in damp soil - they spent most of the winter a darker shade of mud, but when the weather turned good again, boy did they look pretty! Can't wait to see the photos!
feemcg
Well the new girls survived the night (I dreamt that I opened the eglu door and 2 dead chickens rolled out!) OH put them in the wee run. Was going to just let them all out in the garden then they would have plenty space to keep away from each other but its pouring and blowing a gale - maybe later. I've put a shallow bowl in filled with straw, not sure if they would lay in it or not. OH is all gloom and doom"don't think this is going to work" "hope we've done the right thing" etc. but I just keep telling him about all you guys on here that have done it successfully - fingers crossed! Karen & co.
Hi Fee It sounds like all the girls slept together well last night, so hopefully will reduce the pecking, and they will just become friends! karen x
feemcg
Update - the 2 new girls have laid, in a big pile of hemcore, not the nice nest I gave them! They've also managed to get the grub off the side of the run and onto the floor, strange and something the other 3 have never done! They also appear to have snotty beaks - I can't actually see anything, its just theres clumps of hemcore which must be sticking to something! I'm disappointed as the other 3 have never had anything like that ( touch wood). Off to look up snotty beaks in the 'clinic'......
The Dogmother
Are you putting Citricidal in their water Fee? That'll help with snotty noses, as will some garlic powder or granules in their pellets. Just keep an eye on them in case they start to wheeze and it goes to their chests (as said by a veteran of a chook with a wheezy chest )
feemcg
I'm just going out just now to see if I can get some Clare - I need to go and get a bag of pellets, 3/4 down the bag and its all mouldy!
The Dogmother
I had that problem with my last sack of pellets - the last bit was mouldy - turns out that the tiled floor in my utility room was gathering condensation - I've raised the sack off the floor now.
