Minnie&Moose
Martha, our bluebelle, died this evening. She was fine yesterday but looked a bit miserable this morning, as if she had a soft-shelled egg on the way, though she'd already laid a large egg. She was less than a year old and there had been no obvious signs there was anything wrong until this morning. I do keep wondering if I missed something. When I went to shut the chickens up this evening 2 had already put themselves to bed, leaving Martha's space by the nest box empty; the 3rd was pottering around outside calling. It's going to seem strange in the garden without Martha - she was the friendly, cuddly one.

Olly
Sorry to hear that. Chances are that you didn't miss anything - remember that chickens are very good at concealing any symptoms of ill-health because they don't want to lose their place in the pecking order. It may just have been something sudden like her heart. It's very sad when you lose one, but don't blame yourself - chickens are not the most robust of creatures. Carol U
So sorry to hear about Martha. Particularly sad as she was so young. However, I'm sure it was nothing you omitted to do or notice. I'm afraid it's just something that happens with chickens from time to time. xx

Peaches
Really sorry to hear that you lost your lovely Martha. It's so sad when they die, and absolutely normal to wonder if you missed something. It's most likely that you didn't, so just get lots of comfort from the knowledge you gave her a fabulous life for so long. Fiona

littlehenny
I'm so sorry to hear of your loss. I've not experienced this yet, cos i've only had my chooks a year and a bit, so this is all new to me. Dreading the time when the inevitable happens, but at least when she was with you she had a happy life, unlike a lot of chicks. Think of the good times and the fact that you gave her a really good life.
