Getting that first job.......updated!

Recommended Posts

Wow Megan, good luck!

I did hear that Lakeland was opening in the Oracle in September, & I promise Devon won't apply for that one!

Let us know how it goes (also VERY excited to have a Lakeland opening in town - just need a Bravissiomo now!)

Do you know which unit the shop will be in?

I think it might be where the Pier was, because it has an upstairs and a downstairs!! I wouldn't have minded if Devon had applied lol, although she might be a bit late now - the closing date was last Friday!!

How did the interview go Laura?? :D

Fingers crossed, Scrambled - it probably went much better than you think, because all the other people she's interviewing will be the same - you have it all in your head, and then it just goes!

Good advice though, about researching the company a bit and thinking of a few things to ask. That 'strengths and weaknesses' question is a favourite, and don't ever be tempted to reply 'I don't have any weaknesses'. Someone I knew at Uni. did just that, and the interviewer said 'hmm. Arrogance, maybe?' !

Well, I didn't get an interview at Oasis, but at least they bothered to inform me, all the other places I've applied to I haven't heard anything from, these include, Card Factory, Fosse recruitment place and Omlet to do hen parties. Not happy and now I have no idea what to do.

Good luck to you all.

My ED is doing her work experience this week. She is working in a dress design and haberdashery shop and is loving it. She is going to be given a go on one of their industrial sewing machines today and had to unpick a huge hoop from a wedding dress yesterday so that it could be shortened. She has also been helping people try on wedding dresses and ball gowns. :D

She applied to pretty much all such shops in the area and this one is run by a brother and sister and they have been really welcoming. She also only works from 10 'til 5 which means she gets an extra hour in bed every day, some of her friends are working 2 hours longer than that.

Still aren't any more hopes for me. Fosse, Card Factory and Omlet, (to do hen parties) haven't got back to me at all.

Oasis and the opticians I did work experience at wouldn't take me either. Will drop my CV off to New Look tomorrow and maybe pop in to some more shops tomorrow to give them my CV to see what comes up.

I hate this at the minute as I'm on my own most of the time, which I've never really had before as Sarah was back during the summer after uni finished, but now she's a teacher and hasn't finished term yet. Mum works 3 days a week and Dad's fulltime. All the things I really want to do cost money-which I simply do not have.

Rosie has done the rookie lifeguard training and wanted to complete the course, but they've stopped teaching it for a while as the instructor is on maternity leave.

The 50m open air pool at the top of our road opens again this year and I think she wants to work there as a lifeguard as soon as she's old enough.

Fred, do you get to wear red shorts like The Hoff?

I don't know where else I can try tbh ... I might just quit college and get a full time job somewhere. I've seen lots of vacancies for full time staff, just no part time ones.

Don't quite college, with any luck the market will have picked up again when you finish. :D

I know teenagers need money but would either of you consider voluntary work? - it can often lead to some paid work. Places like old peoples homes really need helpers - just talking, making cups of tea, helping with craft mornings.......

Probably not your idea of work but even a couple of days would help with all that time on your hands through the summer and is something to put on your CV?

Great idea Lesley :D

I have just suggested similar to my boss, whose son has just been made redundant and is finding it hard to get work.

For someone who has had a job and then finds themselves without work then voluntary work provides the structure they are used to - I think any benefit claimants might have to see how many hours they are allowed to do though.

Sorry to hear that there isn't much in your area Ubereglu.

It always looks good on your CV.

I did voluntary work and odd bits of saturday/holiday work while at school, held down two part-time jobs while at Uni and have always been in work of some sort.

As the others have said; voluntary work almost always leads onto paid work and something is better than nothing.
