Getting that first job.......updated!

Recommended Posts

Well, I've just got a job + didn't even apply!

Mom just said she's got me a job.

" I haven't applied"

They need someone in her office to do officy stuff + she's said I can do it instead of them getting a temp in.

I might do it but I really need to get a load of animally work experience in.

2 weeks out of the 6 we're going on holiday, I want to learn to drive, the new vets is opening - I have a job there and there other things to do aswell, but you need money for all these things ... will have to think about it!

Word of mouth worked for me, many moons ago when I was 16. A friend of mine worked in a restaurant/motel and got me an interview there. I had a moped though so that helped me find work as I grew up 10 miles from anywhere.

I also waitressed at the local pub. My brother worked after school and weekends at the local butchers shop and packing envelopes in an advertising firm.

Other friends got jobs at supermarkets and in local small shops such as bakers, cafes etc.

I hope she finds something....

Good luck with the job hunting. Its so hard to get a job at that age and very frustrating.

My step daughter went through the exact same thing. She tryed all the usual routes then went out on foot round the town asking in each shop and cafe. She got work finaly in Sports World where they worked her to death for 4 months on long shifts in the evenings after college and weekends. It affected her college work quite severly and she had to give up. Not without a fight though as she liked earning the money but her grades were slipping fast so it had to go. When you work 4 till 10pm 3 nights a week and all weekend it dosent give you much time for college homework. She was a walking zombie. They just kept on asking her to do more and more and when she got hooked on having the cash she wouldnt say no.

When she gave it up she never managed to get another job untill she got a full time one.

I had just hoped for a nice Saturday job but I think you have to be very lucky to strike gold and get a good one.

I worked in JJB Sports when I was at college and loved it. We got to wear black, purple and green shell suits and trainers for a uniform :lol:

my son started washing up in a pub he now waits on the tables and they have taught him bar work as soon as he turned 17 , a great skill to have as you can do that anywhere in the world. I am sure you have some nice pubs in Henley, it may mean picking her up if she is late etc. But a good social. I worked in a wine bar washing up and worked in a factory in the summer holidays

My husband worked in MacDonalds when they very first opened and he had a great time. My kids think that is hilarious but it was good money.

Good luck my son is looking for a full time job as he has just left school, the job market is flat! The only work he has is the pub and he is really glad he has that at the moment as he picks extra shifts up now. But not what he is hoping to do long term. So many places are not recruiting!

indie :)

It may be best to try local shops or establishments, as they probably don't have a formal applications process they tend to take on people who look responsible and have a polite manner (which sounds like your daughter) so go on impressions rather than experience/qualifications etc.. the pay may be lower though but its a good place to start, I got a job in a local chemist at 16 based on no more than a quick polite word with the owners and stayed there until I left school :D

I took on a 16 year old lad recently as an office junior, he'd mumble through his fringe at me when he arrived (everyone said I was mad to take him on) but six months later he has come on leaps and bounds and is a diamond, he works hard and always on time bless him. I am so proud of him and glad that I gave him a good start in to working life :D I can't help but wonder where he would be today if someone hadn't given him a chance, most of his friends can't find a job :(

Things are looking up for me, well I think they are anyway! I e-mailed a shop which has newly opened in town, selling all sorts of environmentally friendly goods, saying I was really interested in what they're trying to do etc and they got back to me today saying they may have some work I can do for them during the summer and I can pop in for an informal chat when I'm next in town!

So fingers crossed I may get a bit of work this summer! :D

A bit of good news at last.

Joules clothing are opening a shop in Henley, & have just phoned asking Devon to come for an interview on Wednesday for the position of weekend sales assistant :P

I know its a long way from being offered a job, but its given her a big boost just to get a call back at last :P

So, positive thoughts for Wednesday, please :P:P:P

(BTW, I don't know if it had anyhting to do with it,but we checked out their website before filling in the form & they have a chickn keeping page, so she mentioned the hens in her application 8) )
