Pruning without gloves

Recommended Posts

Our garden is full of very vigorpus plants, and each spring/summer/autumn I spend an inordinate amount of time pruning.

Yesterday I did a lot during the day, and in the evening I decided to trim one of our shrubs right back (it obscures the cube). It's quite a good natured shrub, not thorny or spiky, and i didn't bother wearing gloves. Actually, I rarely wear gloves unless i'm pruning something spikey.

Sometime after I finished, my finger was a bit sore. I had a number of cuts on my arm from the earlier pruning, and I assumed that I'd cut myself across the knuckle and just couldn't see it. By the time I went to bed it really hurt if I tried to bend it.

I vaguely remembreed pulling out a sliver if shrub, so I swathed it in Savlon and DH covered it in lint.

This morning (and during the night) it was painful non stop. I gtook off the lint and found that my hand was much darker than the other one. I have a clotting problem (blood clots too easily) and having had one DVT & embollism as a result of a broken ankle, I decided to go to our local minior injuries unit, in case I had somehow broken it. I couln't mve it at all at this point.

Anyway. Nurse at MIU found something in the knuckle and has concluded it's now infected. Fingers bound together in this wierd "trouser" arrangement which is putting a lot of pressure on the swelling. Hand elevayed in sling, sent home with antibiotics.

Its my right hand of course, so doing anything with my left takes ages. And it really hurts I feel likesuch a cry baby, as its only my middle finger.

But I do wish i'd worn gloves.

Not sure why i'm posting, just think i'm feeling a bit "poor me".ooh, therres a smiley for it. :boohoo:

thsnks everyone. the painkillers are kicking in now and i'm feeling a bit sheepish for being such a drama queen.

Poor you too

It is horrible how quickly these things can happen and how much it restricts what we can do.

I recommend a day of forum watching, chook watching or if really desperate trash TV and chocolate, it is Friday after all.

Hope you feel better soon.

I turned on the tv to watch a dvd and foud myself watching some shopping thin (whatever channel it was on last night - virgin1? sci fi? - must double as a shopping channel in the day )

i'm now seriously tempted to buy the "total core" workout machine!

must....change....channel....

ouch! A timely warning. A friend pruned her Leylandii recently and came out in a rash - it pays to be careful because you never know quite what you're handling.

I do sympathise about the pain - as posted on here recently, I had a whitlow and the pain was indescribable, every time I bashed that finger (and it happened quite often) I felt sick! Good job you went to get it checked out - keep it elevated, and enjoy a bit of a rest.

You poor thing :( . It sounds like it was really nasty - you obviously did the right thing going to A&E  .

I hope this isn't insensitive but as you sensibly got yourself treated quickly I'm posting it as a warning to others. It rang a bell about a news story I read a while ago. A quick Google brought up a couple of stories like this.
