Headchicken
My girls take garlic (the horsey kind-- I buy mine from Springtime, Inc., but I'm in the US) in their feed and clove in their water. This seems to have really helped keep their poos non-smelly.
glorious chickens
Right okey ill give that a go then thanks i woulld try that stalosan stuff but its a bit expensive
moochoo
Why not try putting a horse bedding down on the ground like Hemcore or Aubiose. This is very absorbant and will help with the niffs.
WitchHazel
Definitely recommend Aubiose or Hemcore. It really helps absorb the poo. I rake mine up once a week, put stalosan on the soil below, remove any bits of decaying vegetation, then rake the old Hemcore/Aubiose back down again. I replace it completely every 3 months. My Girls free range almost all day every day, and I could probably make the Aubiose/Hemcore last another 4 weeks. I'd need to replace it more frequently than every 3 months if the Girls were kept in or if it was very wet. You'll probably need to put something along the sides of the run, as the Girls love scratching around in the Hemcore/Aubiose, and tend to flick it out. Ain't Nobody Here
Stalosan is expensive (especially with P&P) but I bought an 8kg box almost 2 years ago and still have loads and loads left .
Hen Watch
I have Auboise (hemp horse bedding) 1" deep on run floor (with run cover to keep it dry). It soaks up poops in the run and vastly reduces smells. I only change it once a month. Also use Garlic Powder in their feed.
Chook n Boo Mum
Mine's on compacted ex-grass too, I was considering rotavating it this weekend, sprinkling with stalosan & adding a layer of hemcore. I bought some 9m (I think) rolls of lawn edging plastic from Tesco for £2.50 each, so will attach that around the edge. It doesn't seem to matter how often I poo pick, so much gets trodden into the ground that I think I have booted chooks not the funny little clawed versions I should have, in fact looking at the the size of some of the poos I could have a small invisible elephant in residence!!! And the flies are starting to drive me bonkers....... Sha x
chickenanne
Mine were very stinky when left on bare earth (like yours, started as grass!). Defintiely put some sort of bedding down: its absorbent, it's easier to clean, and the run will be niff-free. We've had ours 2 years now and no smelliness. Sarahsausage
I use bark chippings in my run, that way it's easy to pick up the chicken poo each evening which keeps the smell and flies at bay, only takes a few seconds to do if you keep on top of it, also makes the run a pleasant area for your chooks! BarbaraJ
Also once you have the floor bedding sorted, tie a j cloth on roof of run and spray with few drops of each:Citronella, lavender and eucalyptus in spray full of water. Works a treat to keep flies away. i spray till cloth is wet then repeat when dried out
