Mutrix Farmers Posted July 20, 2009 Share Posted July 20, 2009 Son decided he was going to cycle to church yesterday morning, so he got himself up early and off he went. He'd been gone 15 minutes when the phone rang. He'd fallen off his bike and couldn't ride anymore and he wanted OH to bring him home. Why did he fall off his bike? As the brakes were squeaking a bit he'd sprayed them with WD40. He cycled for 2 miles before he need to apply his brakes, only to find they no longer worked and he stopped by catapulting himself over a low wall. Word of advice to all parents of teenage boys - KEEP THE WD40 IN A LOCKED CUPBOARD! After a trip to A & E this morning as his wrist was still hurting, he now has a splint. It's not broken but they want it immobilised. He was only discharged from the Fracture Clinic on Friday having broken his finger 5 weeks ago. I would never oil the brakes (if I had a bike, but it got stolen, but thats another story for another thread) Why didn't he apply the 'emergency' brakes? Otherwise known as feet! Mine are just at the age where fiddling with bikes is compulsory and I hadn't reminded them not to fiddle with the brakes! They have been duly reminded! Its not, the safety sheet says 'This substance has no evidence of carcinogenic properties.' But don't breath it in, its still rather nasty. 'WD40' stands for Water Dispersant (formula) 40, It can disperse the water in your lungs. Which is why it says on the tin "if breathed in seek immediate medical attention". Alis girls Posted July 20, 2009 Share Posted July 20, 2009 O_M_G - if anything sticks or won't work in this house out comes the WD40 i have to say my dad swears by the stuff I thinks MF your son and mine should have chairs side by side in the fracture clinic we in recent yrs seemed to live there. They seem to attract some odd characters I remember being chatted to by a strange fella who told me all about his wounds, gun shot etc and my son told me off for talking to him he said it was because i was wearing patterned tights and an above the knee skirt the things which go thro the teenage boy mind - but thats another thread Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Valkyrie Posted July 20, 2009 Share Posted July 20, 2009 Oh dear - I had to laugh too (stifled it a bit because everyone has gone to bed). I'm glad he's OK though. I was always falling off my bike - I can sympathise - but I never greased the brakes! DD always had a problem using her brakes - it's as if pedalling and steering was enough and braking was multitasking too much! She came off down a stony unmade road (it was a steep hill) and because she was wearing a little crop top - she landed on her stomach and basically rubbed all the skin off. I had to go and pick them up (DD and OH), put the bikes in the back (thank goodness we had an Escort estate), bung her in a Savlon bath to try and clean her up and then took her to the emergency surgery in the next village. Luckily I'd done all my first aid fine - some holes were really deep and the nurse sorted them out. DD was really proud of her huge pads that the nurse used. I then had to buy up Boots for yet more additions to the first aid box! I remember being cold called by a hospital person doing a survey to see what I kept in my first aid box. He said he knew where to come! Most people had a few plasters and Savlon - I had the works! He asked why so much - because most of the people in my family are accident prone!
