medical advice? **Reader caution advised

erm, can anyone advise me on this please

After my period finishes I get very severe stomach ache and the runs for a day or so. It's too much of a coincidence not be related but why does this happen? As if having a period isn't bad enough

it's so embarrassing because I literally have to curl up with the pain and I get no warning that it's coming on but when the pain starts I, erm, have to make a very quick dash, so if I'm in company it's

Because it's only once a month I've tended to ignore it but I'm more curious than anything as to why it happens.

I used to get terrible plapitations the week before I was due on too but that's mostly under control with flecainide now. The doc told me the palps weren't related to my period but they ALWAYS happened just before I was due on so how couldn't they be related?

Anyway, don't want to sound like a moaning minnie! I'm just off to bed and thought I'd ask before I pop up :D

Could it be a reaction to painkillers that you take during? I have a nasty tummy uoset and cramping reaction to co-codamol for example.

I don't take painkillers during as I don't really have period pains as such, not severe enough for painkillers anyway.

I'll have to mention it to my doc

No idea Poet :?

Been having a look on the web and cannot seem to find an answer :(

Can only find out about IBS or menstrual cramps, although I did read that IBS can be triggered by hormones so maybe that's a possibility?

Not very fair on you though having to put up with that so maybe see your GP or give NHS direct a call?

Keep us updated :D

I do scan some patients with gynae problems. The ones that have similar symptoms to you usually have adhesions, endometriosis or large fibroids. These all effect the bowel by either attatching themselves to it or releasing large amounts of hormone that gets absorbed into the bowel. These cause spasms and an urgent need to evacuate!

It would definitely be worth getting checked out by a gynacologist.

Sounds like good advice, you have nothing to loose by getting it checked out and you could stop years of discomfort. I used to get occasional 'flutters' and dizzy spells just before a period. I read somewhere that eating something starcy every 2 hours can help - it did!

Oh Poet, poor you...

Dont get ahead of yourself tho (it's easy to do)

I'd advise going to your GP and see if he can help or refer to do your local womens's clinic to see a gynaecologist. Once there they will scan you as Moochoo says to see if there are any problems that need dealing with.

IF you require any surgery, deal with it then, dont worry about it now, while your feeling so terrible. I am sure you already do, but if not begin keeping a diary so that you can so the cycle of pain...

If you need anymore info PM me :D

There seem to be lots of women on medications to control their symptoms, some that are more severe do go for keyhole surgery to release adhesions or to cut of the blood supply to fibroids.

It's worth checking it out because there could also be cysts that could be potentially dangerous if left.

Chances are it probably something quite minor. It seems short lived and only happens once a month. You don't have any prolonged bleeding or pain on ovulation.

Getting it investigated will put your mind at rest and could offer you a solution.

I get exactly the same as you except my cramps are a few days before not after! Like you as its only once a month i just ignore it, it has been getting worse lately but i have been under a great deal of stress so have just been putting it down to that!

Let me know how you get on if you do get checked out!

This could be retrograde bleeding: the backflow of menstrual fluid, epithelial cells ,and debris through the uterine tubes and into the peritoneal cavity.

This can cause quite intense cramping, and can be very painful. It is also linked to endometriosis.

Pop and see your GP, hopefully they will be helpful and kind!

you could have a retroverted uterus(tips back and sits more over bowel than over bladder)??..getting more frequent bowel movements can be due to menstrual cramping..but need a check ..sorry tip back uterus can stimulate bowel at menstruation time(15% population have it this way considered still normal though)

Analgesics tend to consitpate and what appears as diarrhoea is usually overflow(it all comes at once...body trying to evacuate a formed stool) not true diarrhoea as such! Even if its quite watery etc

good luck indie
