House Hunting. Odd happening.

Recommended Posts

As it's tipping down over here at the moment, we were chatting about places we had viewed. In 1974 we went to see a 2 bed garden flat in SE London. The particulars said it was a large well proportioned flat with a large rear garden, built in the 1930s. with 2 parking spaces. With a £9,000 price tag (it was 1974) which was well cheap even then. Grabbing the keys we were off like a shot. From the outside it looked like a nice brick built block of 8 flats, and only 2 storeys high. Had a look around the outside, parking spaces were by the side of the flat, looked over the rear fence the garden was big but overgrown and looked as it said in the details 80'x18'. It had those nasty looking Crittal window frames, but hey ho easily replaced. So we put the key in the door and went in Eileen went first turned left into the lounge. I stepped over the threshold and stopped dead in my tracks. I hated the place there and then. A wave of oppression hit me and I was in receipt of a massive headache. I couldn't go forward and just had to get out. The minute I was outside in the sunshine I felt fine. When Eileen came looking for me I told her what had happened. She said it was a lovely flat, very large and airy, both bedrooms were doubles. I tried to go in again, it was just the same like walking into an oppressive cloud. I said we'll look at it again on Saturday it being a Thursday. Came back on Saturday with the estate agent, same result, never felt anything like it before or since. By the way the estate agent looked a bit reticent and off colour too, perhaps it was something to do with being male

We eventually bought a 2 bedroomed terraced in a tree lined avenue in Sidcup, but it cost £11,000 and was freehold not leasehold like the flat.

We've often wondered what it was that caused me the problem with that flat?. Why was it on the market for so long, and at such a cheap price. We think it did sell, we saw it several months later, new front door and windows, and a car parked outside.

I have to say that I've had/seen some strange events, but I don't believe in ghosts, or ghouls........ Met some strange people though.

We've lived in houses (and still do :anxious: ) with a strange atmosphere. Actually a house we had on Hurst Road, Sidcup had a really spooky feel to it and I don't know why my parents bought it. We only stayed just over a year. Upstairs was just so scary.

We've had a few happenings here but nothing that freaks us out. The cats always stare upstairs at the same time. Things move up there and the taps get turned on but its all good. We call 'it' Frank. :D

I was watching a relocation programme once and they went into this old house and up to the attic room, the man in the partnership had a very strange feeling and had to get out really quickly. He refused to go back in there.

My great granddad's house in Peckham was a 3 or 4 storey house and there were several sightings or feelings of something in that house. We used to be petrified when we went over there. Not helped by the fact that the toilet was in the garden!

The Halifax in Sidcup has a ghost. I used to work there occasionally, and there was a corridor leading to the store room where leaflets used to be kept, you would often hear sounds coming from there, and when "she" was active it used to be noticeably colder there.

I think some people are more sensitive than others, and I certainly think that places give off vibes, I often walk into places and don't like the vibes.

I have come across a couple of haunted buildings.............one was the bungalow we lived in when I was a child. The old lady who lived there before us had died in the bungalow and whilst her body had been removed her spirit forgot to go. It didn't help when Dad chopped down her favorite tree in the garden............she wasn't evil just badly behaved ( one of the regular tricks was the sound of fingernails running down a window).

The other building was my 6th form centre- an old merchants house. That had two ghosts, one in each wing. I couldn't walk along some of the corridors and had to make some long detours to avoid them and the locker room was really creepy. On one occasion we were sat in the upper 6th common room when a large framed picture lifted off the wall turned 90 degrees in mid air and slid between two chairs ( the chairs were occupied at the time). It took some explaining to the head of the 6th form!

Odd things have happened in my house too, although it generally has a happy feel to it.

Before we bought it ,it was lived in by an old chap called Ted who was confined to downstairs & used to bang on the neighbouring wall to get assistance if he was in trouble.

It happened more & more frequently until his death, after which the house lay empty for several years until we bought it.

Anyhow, as you can imagine,it needed a lot of work & our neighbours were very tolerant of the bangs & crashes as we made it habitable.

But one morning my neighbour popped her head over the fence to ask what we had been doing the previous night, as there was really loud banging & knocking on the adjoining wall until very late.

As it happened, we had been away all night.................my neighbour went a bit pale when I told her that, & remembered it had been Teds birthday that day & the bangs were coming from the same area of wall he used to bang on to get their attention

 Ooh - I shall see if I get any vibes next time I go in there!

ES said he woke up the other morning to find his study chair had moved from across the room. I've heard my daughter's chair move across her floor when there's been no-one else in but as I say the house has a friendly feel to it so we don't worry too much. :anxious:

My OH's cousin goes off for ghost hunting weekends and her OH is attuned to things like this. They've often said they'll come over and see if they can get rid of Frank but I quite like it. :D

There is a lovely house near to me that all of the locals call 'The Jinxed House'. No one stays there for long and something always happens to the people that move there such as divorce, illness, accidents etc. It is always for sale for ages as the only people who are likely to buy it are those that don't know it's reputation.

Did you know that room 4 at the old 'Station Hotel' at Sidcup was supposed to be haunted. It's said a young man committed suicide, in that room in the 1920s. we watched it being demolished, only to be replaced by the 'Iron Horse', and that was burnt down.

Strange place Sidcup, we wound up in a detached bungalow in 'Little Birches'. Glad to see the back of the place......

I've never lived in a house with anything other than my family in it but last year OH and I went to the workhouse near Lincoln. it was a lovely sunny hot day and when I got out of the car it was stone cold. I had the most awful feeling come over me, so cold so oppressive, shivers down my spine. I went so white OH thought I was ill. It was a terrible place in it's time and I think I felt that.

I can't go to Dungeness. The first time I went there a few years ago I suddenly got really depressed - as soon as we hit the area, and in floods of tears and begged my husband to get me away from there immediately. We have been back once since & exactly the same depression came over me within seconds, the tears started streaming & I had to get away immediately. Needless to say we haven;t been back. We have no idea why I get such an extreme reaction. I have no connection with the place (that we are aware of) and it has been beautifully sunny days both times. Most people find it a fascinating place - it has a lot of wildlife etc but for me it is an immediate shutdown

I have had some other weird and wonderful happenings in places but you would all think I was a complete nutter so will not post for all to see! However my Nan is a spiritualist & I have been brought up with it all.

Well you know the Iron Horse was replaced by the Metro Bar which was in the news last year for a very sad happening. :(

Have heard of Little Birches but no idea where.

Redfrock - we often go to Dungeness to the Pilot Inn, fantastic fish and chips and it is a very strange landscape but I'm actually starting to really like it there, perhaps my spook radar is switched off now.

Me too! Brrrr.

Woolworths in Ruislip was haunted by a lady in a big dress and bonnet. There were definite cold spots in the stockrooms which I could feel. Others saw movement on the shopfloor on CCTV when no-one else was in the building. She took a particular dislike to one member of staff and enjoyed aiming boxes at her as she walked around the stockroom  The saturday staff were scared of using the lift and stockroom alone!

Did a bit of research and found that it used to be the site of a farmhouse and that the farmer's wife died in labour - her clothing matches the time period, so we think it was her, poor soul. She always did like to hang out amongst the kidswear :( The weird thing is, Ruislip High Street until recently would hold an annual Victorian Evening in Nov/Dec and so for one night, the staff would all be wondering round in big dresses and bonnets. Bet that freaked her out a bit.

Have heard of Little Birches but no idea where.

It runs between Longlands Road and Harland Avenue.

We wondered where the Metro Bar was when we saw it on the news.........

Ok know where it is now! OH and I would love to move, in fact we were in a coffee shop in Bexleyheath this morning discussing it. Trouble is the two boys, they don't want to move. DD doesn't care as she is at uni and spends most of her time elsewhere. Might just have to bite the bullet and do it.

Just thinking about this again ...

When the neighbours daughter was 1 or 2 and going to bed, she used to point at the corner of her room and say "lady", her parents thought it was really strange.

Also, my aunt + uncles house is built were the old doctors surgery used to be, and they have been pinned to the bed, and have had glasses thrown across the kitchen and smash! Apparently a Dr. died there and they know his name ..... wierd!

I get the vibes thing too and can often 'feel' if a friend is in trouble; they joke about me knowing when to call them.

Have had the odd vibes about houses when viewing too - this one had a good feel, so I bought it. Next door is hauntedm but the ghost is benign.

My grandma was a bit of a witch at times and could always sense things. She said that if a trauma had happened in a place, then the spirit or feeling stayed there as a 'marker'.

Slightly more amusing one for you all.....

A ex-colleague of mine told me this story of when a new guy came to work for him - a young lad and they both went off to see a customer.

The new guy was presenting whatever they were selling at the time (forget what exactly but not important) and his bosos (my ex-colleague) was aware that he kept getting distracted, going bright red and losing what he was saying.

After the meeting, he asked the guy what on earth was happening as if it was nerves it was a bit extreme and he replied that he had no idea why no one else in the room commented on it and assumed it was a wierd initiative test and that he had failed.

Apparently in the corner of the room, a lady walked in, smiled at the guy who was presenting and started flashing at him lifting up her top, smiling, blowing kisses and winking at him.

My boss was convinced there was absolutely no one else in the room other than the two of them and the customer and he rang the customer to have the strangest conversation he has ever had over the phone.

Fortunately, the customer had seen this once before and assumed the original time it had happened it was a joke but was off to start investigating...

Sadly I don't know what happened next but I think it meant that the poor new guy kept his job!!!!
