Mite advice

Help.

I have spent a whole evening 'doing research' about ivomec eprinex and am still a little confused. I know and understand it is not recommended for use on poultry so accept any information with this in mind.

I want to know:

What is the difference between IVOMEC and EPRINEX?????

Am I aiming for the one that has 'eprinomectin' in it or 'ivermectin' in it?

Can I use it after I finish the flubenvet?

Tomorrow will be the last day of my 7 day Flubenvet worming treatment (so bare that in mind) but during a routine check of my ladies I noticed that 3 have mites crawling within their feathers! I have dusted them, and added powder to their dustbath and dusted the run and coop (and tomorrow I'm rescrubbing it all out). But the crawlie critters are just not shifting!!

On Thursday our beloved speckledy - Barbara - died (she just went pale & listless and faded away over 3 days!!!) :( and I am desperate to make sure the others don't go the same way.

My vet doesn't seem to know much about chickens!

Any advice would be appreciated.

PP Barbara RIP

Sorry Mrs B, I know nothing about those chemicals. I used Frontline for cats (not licensed for chickens, has 7day(?) egg withdrawal period) when my girls had "visitors". Fortunately I haven't had any problems since...says she frantically touching wood

Somebody more useful is bound to pootle along soon.

RIP Barbara too :(

Ivomec Eprinex has eprinomectin and Ivomec is ivermectin.

I use Eprinex twice yearly, in the autumn and in the spring, as a spot-on and Flubenvet (though not at the same time) four times a year as my lot free range all day.

They are similar drugs Eprinex probably has the edge and has well documented doses for chooks.

Eprinex and Ivomec are not licenced for use in poultry in the UK

Hope that helps.

Thank you all so much. I popped in to see the vet earlier today to ask his advice - he was away so I spoke to the locum (?). He knew nothing about anything when it came to chickens

So. . .

I have decided to buy some Eprinex online and go with that. But think I'll wait a week as they have just been wormed (will have to carry on powdering them!)

The pet shop owner sold me something called Magic Dragon powder (suitable for all animals and all mites and lice) apparently it contains diatoms which I have read about. So will give this a go over next couple opf days too.

Has anyone heard of this Magic Dragon powder??

Regards

I use Eprinex* on my girls, 3 times a year as a preventative, and have found it to be excellent.

I'd recommend using that, plus a thorough spraying of a permethrin* based spray if you see any lice on the girls. The spray will need to be repeated after a week to break the egg cycle.

Diatom will kill lice and mites on application, but isn't very reliable and I have seen housing where mites are crawling through Diatom :? Having said that, I use it in my hens' dustbath.

Please be aware that you ought to treat the housing too just to be on the safe side; I clean mine each week with either Poultry Shield or Total Mite Kill.
