Fizzle Knit
OK, I know that's a "how long is a ball of string" question, but I'd be interested to hear other people's experiences. Ours seems to be taking an extremely long time - not including the utility room we are now into the fifth week, and tiling/flooring/finishing off/ and plaster skimming not yet done. The constant presence of a (very nice) builder, especially during the school holidays, is getting wearing! (And I do appreciste tht I am going to have a really nice kitchen at the end of it - I am grateful for that, )
Leicester_H
W had our garage convertd to a kitchen. Conversion took 2 weeks and I think fitting kitchen took another 2 weeks. Floor tiled, cupboards fitted from scratch. Sink plumbed in etc. 5 weeks seems like a very long time. H
Tiggy
took mine 4 weeks, partly because the ceiling fell down & had to be re done, Oh the joys of an old house. My bathroom took the same builders nearly 8 wks!!!!!
WarrensWorld
We had a bespoke kitchen fitted 2 years ago, it took 3 1/2 days and cost €8000.00, about £7050.00. The kitchen fitters over here don't do the plumbing or the electrics!!!!!. I did them myself it took me about 10 hours. edit: Even now I think it was a tad expensive for a 14'6" X 12'6" kitchen, but it's solid Beech and Eileen loves it. Lydia
Last year our kitchen took 8 weeks. But that was because we knocked down a wall to create a kitchen/diner and it was originally an outside supporting wall before the previous owners built the extension. I know exactly what you mean - I found it extremely hard to put up with someone being in my house all the time. Plus the fact that we had no water downstairs, were camping in the lounge and, for a time, could only get to the chickens by going out the front door and round the back and had no outside lights so locking the girls in at night in pitch darkness (this was November) was......challenging. The worst bit however was towards the end it was so nearly finished but not quite there. Hang on in there.
Cooks
My kitchen took months, but then again it had to be built first... (it's now in the back of the house in the extension , whereas before the kitchen was on the side in what is now the utility room) Once it was built the underfloor heating had to go in before the floor was tiled, then my husband (carpenter) fitten out kitchen and utility room so it was rather quick as he doesn't hang around. Then I had to have the granite people bring over the granite for them to install the worktops, it took a long while actually.. Electrics and plumbling *shudder* luckily they all worked around each other the house was buzzing for a while there. Good luck! The choosing of the kitchen was the easiest part for me but the total cost of my kitchen and utility room was well over £12k including everything *gulp* serves us right for building such a huge kitchen I guess. I dont think I have ever fully recovered from that cost.. however it is a kitchen that doesn't date so I wont have to change it.
Fizzle Knit
Sounds like mine is excessive time-wise then! And I'm trying not to dwell on the cost of it At least wer're being charged for the job, not by the day, that would be really scary! Last year we had a loft conversion and everything, baqr painting the walls, but including laying wooden flooring and creating a shower room was done over 12 weeks, and felt far less invasive. Still, the end is near ... (I keep telling myself).
Snowy
It does sound like a long time. Ours was replaced about 10 years ago now, no building work required, and it took a week. Hope it gets finished soon!
Rhesus
I refitted our kitchen in the old house in 9 days, which included gutting the old, stripping off tiles and plaster, new plumbing, new plaster, light fittings and building and fitting new cupboards, tiling and grouting. It was a big job as it was the first time I'd done it but, I was doing 13/14 hour days to get it sorted. Doris Marjorie Hilda

TAJ
Ours took us 3 weeks, luckily we had a kitchen in the caravan, so just camped out there whilst it was being done. Tracy
rosie
Our new kitchen fitted about 2 years ago took ages- 2 weeks was suggested but it took more like 6 or 7. We used a lovely local carpenter who really took his time and did a wonderful job. Just as well as my hubby is an engineer and is a bit anal about these things. However my two sons were home from Uni at the time, and every evening when I returned home from work, the 2 boys, hubby and carpenter pal were sitting outside on chairs on the patio, drinking beer/wine and discussing all of the ills of the world together !! I ended up feeding the whole lot using one microwave and a steamer. Fixed price job, but I think he just liked being with the boys and didn't want to leave?
